Get dial-up handshake, but no IE or Firefox

WinME box had to be scraped down to the HD after an attempt to go wireless
failed utterly (Thanks, Linksys!). Perhaps some of those settings tweeks
scrambled things...and may have forced my hand into reinstalling (LOL).

Reloaded IE 5 (came with the computer), installed IE6 (SP1 from CD) as well
as Firefox. Neither one works after I dial up, tho' I get a nice, firm
handshake with the ISP.

Rid the box of malware (well...using out of date Ad-Aware and Spybot), tried
LSP.fix and Winsockfix (both via .zip). No joy.

TIA

Did you reinstall WinME, IE5 or both? Had IE6 ever been installed before
the "reloading" or reinstalling?

Not ME, only IE5 from the manufacturer's CD. I had previously upgraded it to
IE6. After reinstalling all drivers, discovered I was back with my ol' pal
IE5. The reinstall bumped once, but "Zoo's" technique saved the day, so now
it does indeed show IE6.

Quick guess; the machine is confused as to whether you're using dial-up
or networking for the internet connect. Come to think of it so am I;
what were you going to connect the Linksys with ?

The original intent was to put a wireless router oin this XP box, which is
connected to cable...but the WinMe box defeated me.

No hint that the box is confused...in fact, it seems to be sneering at me
thru the screen...I...I can FEEL it!!! HELP! ARG!

Have you tried putting the router on the cable modem? Then connect the
nearest box (XP I presume) to the routers wire network input (if the
wireless router has one)... then worry about the WinME box and the
wireless bit. From what (I interpret) you wrote, you've gotta deal with
"Internet Connection Sharing" the way you have it set up currently.

Well, the Linksys stuff was returned to the store after that episode, so I am
not interested in doing wireless right now. Thanks anyway, Rick.

modem ----> router ----> PC(s) is the normal way of hooking these things up.

I am curious as to why wirelesses seem to cause many more problems than
the garden-variety router though (I haven't tried it myself, yet).

Robear (and any others waiting for a resolution)-outside pressures (read:
family) forced me to punt and re-format; done successfully. I hope never to
replicate that problem (no more wireless attempts on WinME for me!),
so...until the next time.

Thanks, all.
