I'm not sure what kind of problem I am facing with the German spell checker:.
While I am able to check German spelling for most words, I am running into
problems with all words that need more than one correction. I am using a
regular US keyboard, so I have no Umlaut and no "ß" and when I write a word
like "maessig", which should be corrected to "mäßig", the spell checker
doesn't come up with any suggestion at all. Why is that?

You could always setup a German keyboard in Windows and display the key
mappings for the special characters using the on-screen keyboard until you
are familiar with their positions.

Go into Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Languages, Details
and click Add. Then add German. Now you can switch with the language bar
between English and German. Once you switch to German, your keyboard
will behave as if it is a German keyboard and give you all the
characters you want, e.g. "y" and "z" are replaced, etc.
It's difficult for a spellchecker to always come up with the words you
intended to write.
