POKO,
A more direct link is:

I read about this in Alice Hill's blog, Realtechnews a while back. It
led to this link:

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

My solution,

Turn off automatic updates.
Download and install AutoPatcher-

Torrent tracker page-

I recently took this program for a spin, on a freshly imaged WinXPHome
computer. No problems to report, yet. ;)
I see that the Windows Genuine Advantage tools are included in the June
update, but are optional items, so I presume you would have to specifically
select them before they would be installed.
Definately worth a look, especially if you like to muck around with
computers, and/or you don't trust MS.

I had to agree to installing new software first (which *later* turned
out to be WGA) *before* getting to the list of critical updates.

Here's mine!

Boot into safe mode and log into the administrator account or any account
with admin privileges.

Search the C:\ drive, and delete WGATray.EXE wherever it exists. (usually
twice)

In RegEdit, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonNotify Find a key called "WGALOGON" and delete
it.

Reboot

Turn off Auto Update... it isn't needed if you use malware protection,
firewall, and all your hardware works.

Bob, didn't somebody say that WGA automatically reinstalls itself? Have
you looked to see if this was the case on your system?

There was a reference somewhere to a WGA icon in the system tray? I have
WGA installed (got duped like a lot of other people by MS when I went to
Windows Update), but there is no such icon. Also, I watch (as early as
possible) processes load at startup, and I've never seen WGA start and
run. I wonder if it's going through some other process though.

To be honest, I think MS is shameless, and nothing really embarasses them.

I checked out Windows XP on Amazon: 170 GBP. OUCH! DOUBLE OUCH! I've
seen new up-to-date computers that I could buy (admittedly without
monitors) for just a tad over that (check out ebuyer, for example).

Oh how I wish everybody would just switch to Linux. It's got emacs,
tonnes of programming languages ready to rumble. KDE even has its own WP
and spreadsheet (OK, there's OpenOffice, but it's so sllllow). Maybe not
the last word in word processors and spreadsheets, but it's there.

Oh how I wish everybody would just switch to Linux.

We're trying, Mark;

But we've got to keep productivity going at the same time. The one
thing that keeps holding us up is networked device. It can be a
printer, scanner or NAS: Linux disto administrations vary and often the
gui's made to simplify are too simple or 'near-primetime.'

Whether it's Suse's semi-finished KDE printer installer routines or
Ubuntu's "I'll protect you from yourself" school of indirect admin'ing,
after a while we just push the collective chair back and say "we'll try
again later."

But, we're trying.

I have WGA installed but no wgatray.exe file or wgalogon in the
registry.I do have a bunch of .dll files, wgacustom.dll,
legitcheckcontrol.dll.Also a lot of WGA keys in the Updates section of
the registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\WGA\SP0\WGA I

So, are you saying that you used AutoPatcher, and that it installed WGA
without you selecting it? Or are you saying that this happened while using
MS Update?

Hell yea it does!

It can be defeated by turning off Automatic Updates, which MS has also made
frustrating. }:-()

My final solution is to download XP Anti-Spy and select the "regserver32
DLL's" options at the very bottom of the screen. Works a treat.

Who would have thought "XP Anit-Spy" would be literal some day? :-\
