I guess a little more information would be helpful, sorry about that. I am
running XP Pro SP2. I recently did a fresh install and this pc is set up to
do internet connection sharing with another pc in my home. Everything was ok
until today I was just browsing the web and got the error that the Generic
Host process for Win 32 had encountered a problem and needed to close. My pc
froze up and did a few flickers on the screen and it would show I was still
online but I couldn't bring up anything on the web. I am on dial up and I
could pick up my phone and hear the dial tone. The port was open and I had
to restart my pc to "disconnect" when I tried to reconnect the pc froze at
the login window. It took several attempts to connect again.

The Generic Host Process is a host for other processes. There are
typically 3 or 4 Generic Host Processes running at any one time, and
taken together, they host dozens of processes, any one of which could be
causing your problem. Find the underlying host that causes your problem
and you'll know what to do.

The first thing to suspect is one of the many types of malicious
software, known collectively as malware. Malware is usually (but not
always) behind Generic Host error messages. Svchost.exe is a convenient
way for malware to disguise itself, since few people know how to see the
processes running behind svchost or understand what they are.

Since malware can be very hard to detect you typically need to scan your
system for malicious software with /several/ of the better online
scanners (Kaspersky, Eset, Trend Micro, Panda, Sophos, Symantec etc.) If
necessary, submit a HiJack This log to one of the expert web sites that
analyze these logs.
