Do I want to accept inbound connections from generic host processes
(svchost), in addition to allowing outbound connections? The firewall
keeps asking...

Greetings --

I certainly wouldn't. Do you know where, specifically, the
requests are originating?

Yep, it's a cable modem. Not sure I understand why it's ok in this
case, possible to maybe give a brief explanation? Thanks!

I think it has something to do with when your ip lease gets renewed. Not
exactly sure though.

If you have a second computer or local net and are providing that with
internet access through Internet Connection sharing, then you may need
it. Not otherwise

No you do not have to allow GHP to accept connections from the
internet when running Comcast. I use Comcast and GHP is blocked as a
server by Zone Alarm and I have no problems at all.

You do have to let GHP have access to the net outgoing though.

What are the consequences of blocking outgoing GHP? I had it blocked
for a while and didn't see any obvious glitches...

There are some things that want it - for example AutoUpdate and Internet
Time Sync. It is not going to do harm - producing and installing a
nasty as a service would be a lot of work, and the people who write
these things have easier approaches

May depend on your system. Mine would not even get an IP from the
DHCP server of my ISP if I blocked GHP outgoing.

But there is defenitely no need for GHP to have server rights.
