Generic Host Process..

J

JD

I'm moving from 98SE to XP so I'm not familiar with the XP Services.

When I connect to the Internet I get the following question from my Zone
Alarm firewall:

Do you want to allow Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services to accept
connections from the Internet?

Can I mark this as something that always runs?

Yes. Or you will not be able to connect to the internet yourself when you
want to.

Yes.

Svchost.exe is the Generic Host Process for Win32 Services.

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At
startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a
list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can
run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of
services.

Svchost.exe can also be malware if located other than in
%SystemRoot%\System32.

I may be stupid, but many enigmatic questions like that are why a
uninstalled Comodo and went for the XP firewall.

XP's firewall will NEVER bother you with malware on your machine accessing
the internet. It does not have the capability of stopping outbound traffic.

Yes. I know that. Better than nothing.
I'm just not sophisticated enough to use Comodo.
Who knows what an acceptable process is??

XP dials home more than 98SE did so I ask in this newsgroup what an
acceptable process is. Generic Host gets to dial home, my printer doesn't.

Keep having fun.
