I tried posting this in the "general" newsgroup, but got no response:

----------------

Lately I've been getting an error message that seems to be connected in the
"greying out" of my audio and sound device options. It reads:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Someone else who is running XP has started to experience the exact same
problem. I have tried a restore, ghosting a clean install and doing a
complete reinstallation, but the error message and consequences repeat.

Anyone have a similar experience, or knows what's going on?

Thanks.

netapi32.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x0000a3c0."

This is from the event viewer.

The last time I got the error was after a absolutely clean install. I was
only able to install the inf, video and sound drivers before the error
showed up. Any chance it might be a boot sector virus causing this error?

A boot sector virus is extremely unlikely. It is much more probable that you
have some hardware problems. Here are some general hardware troubleshooting
steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
