Generic CDROM Drivers

I installed a DVD Burner in a 2K Server. I just replaced the old IDE CDROM
with a new IDE burner. (A relatively simple exchange one would think) The
LG DVD burner was recognized correctly, but the drivers (I suspect) were
corrupted when being installed. The device manager reports error 19 -
corrupted registry. Replaced the DVD burner with the old CDROM drive while I
tried to figure this out... The old CDROM drive now no longer works. It's
reporting the same error as the DVD burner! Both devices now load at boot
time with an exclamation mark and will not show up in "My Computer". 2
Questions...

1) Assuming the CDROM driver that is being loaded is the same for both IDE
devices (generic CDROM driver), how do I replace the corrupted driver that
windows is now using?

2) If I attach the same DVD burner to the system using a USB external case
and a USB 2.0 PCI card (motherboard is 1.1), will I get a new driver, or the
same old corrupted CDROM driver?

Any help would be appreciated. TIA!
