Generating purchase order numbers

I am using Excel to set up a purchase order document for our company. We always have to input a new number when we generate a new p.o. Is there any kind of formula that I could use that would allow the new document to generate the next number in the sequence? Any help or insight is much appreciated.

Monica, here is one way, you could use a macro like this one, you could also
use it in a open or before print event
Sheet1.[A1] = Sheet1.[A1].Value + 1
