General protection fault

Does anyone know why I might be getting a general
protection fault in user.exe while using Internet Explorer
6? What can I do to fix it?

It sounds like you're using Windows 98, or maybe
earlier. USER.EXE is a fixed resource in windows that is
used for memory addressing and such that only a
programmer should have to understand. Point is though,
that everything on your computer just about interacts
with it.

So, to answer that question is far more difficult than it
might seem. It's a little like asking why a car might
not start in the morning. There are a variety of reasons.

What you can do though, is try to find out WHAT you are
doing when it happens. Do you have other applications
open? Is the computer running slow? Does it happen only
at one web site? Is it always when the PC has been on
for all day long? What if nothing else is running and
you've just rebooted - does it still happen?

GPF (general protection faults) are very difficult to
troubleshoot, and this (above) is how you start. I'm
sorry you have to endure this, but unfortuately, there is
no shortcut.

The ONLY time there is a shortcut, is if it's a known
bug, and then you can type in the exact error, what you
were doing, and you'll find a result from MS's site.
That's relatively rare though. Sorry.
