General error in the Import Text Wizard (Excel 97)

Dear All,

When I try to open an ASCII file using the Import Text Wizard (Excel 97), I
get an error message and I'm not able to open the file. I get the following
message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If
the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

If I click Details, I get the following message:

"EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 015f:3007abc7"

And continues with a set of numbers and letters under the heading "Registers".

It happens when running under Win 98 and also under Win XP.

Any idea of what might be wrong?

Can you open the ASCII file in Wordpad/Notepad or Word, and then
copy and paste into Excel?

Thanks for your suggestion.
I've tried that before but the trouble is that my data is in columns and, in
Excel, I need it also separated in columns for further processing... If I do
what you've suggested, I get everything in the same column. I mentioned ASCII
files but the same happens with .txt files...
