I wish to keep a check on my GAS bill, but unable to follow the
suppliers "how we calculate" figures.........heres the info:

Present Reading..9663
Previous reading..9591
Conversion factor...1.022640
Calorific value........39.1

How they calculate:
1. Multiply the cubic metres used by the standard temperature &
pressure conversion as shown within the charges details.
2. Multiply by the calorific value of the gas supplied.
3. Devide by 3.6 to convert from therms to kWh.

Answer was £32.00

Can someone tell me how to arrive at £32.00 please?

TIA

Hi Terry,

This is probably a silly question, but what did your gas company say
when you called to ask them to explain the calculation?

You need at least one more piece of info - the price per therm or price
per kWh.

If you put Present reading in A1 and previous reading in A2, then you
can calculate the kwh as

=(A2-A1)*A3*39.1/3.6 ====> 799.70448 kwH

If your bill was £32.00, that suggests that your price per kWh is

=32/799.70448 = £0.04/kWh

Price per kWh = 1.41400

As mentioned by Mr/s McGimpsey, there is missing informaion:

If they aren't giving you all the information you need and ask for,
they are treating you and other customers like putz, and that is not
on.

I'd complain to OFGAS in that case.

Hi Terry,
Price per kWh = 1.41400
Would you please confirm the units for this item ?

Calculations made by JE are fully correct, rough values and final price
per kWh seems ok to me.
If I compare to my final gas price as a home customer in France, I got
0.0402 euro / kWh which is roughly the rate given by JE.
The conversion GBP / EUR (1,7 to 1) makes hope that monthly rate is
probably already included in your bill, so unit price should be lower.

Can't imagine 1.414 GBP / kWh (

Thanks
JE's post gives me the answer, but unable to see where the 1.41400 kWh
(p) kicks in.!

Hi Terry,
I'd be more concerned with actual amount of gas
consumption over the years rather than directly
with the cost, since you don't have control over
the price of the energy.

You already got your answer but you could have done
something like this:

Present Reading 9665 9665
Previous Reading 9591 9591
usage 74 =B2-B3
conversion
1.02264 75.67536 =A6*B4

Caloric factor
39.1 2958.906576 =B6*A9
Convert to kWh
3.6 821.9184933 =B9/A11
price per kWh
0.04 32.87673973 =A13*B$11 .04 was a guess
0.038933301 32 =A14*B$11 perhaps .0389 per kWh

You get your gas supplied by Powergen don't you? I recognise the tex
from my bills. If you go back and look at bills from around a yea
ago, you'll see that there used to be an extra step immediately befor
where you started quoting....

"Multiply the volume of gas by 2.83 to give the volume of gas supplie
in cubic metres."

In other words, the calculation currently cited on the bills forget
the bit about converting from cubic feet to cubic metres. If yo
insert this missing step you will find that you arrive nicely at wha
they are charging you.

I spoke to them yesterday and they are aware of this error an
apparently are going to do something about it
