Games accessing restricted space

Guest

I haven't played many games for lengthy periods of time, So I don't know for
sure if my problem is with all games or just the few I'm going to mention.
When I play WarCraft 3 Reign of Chaos, or SpellForce (Platinum Edition)
Both games the campaign version, after about an hour of play I get booted
from the games with an error that says thread trying to access a restricted
area. I click ok and that's it game over in order to continue play I have to
restart the game and continue from last saved point, which is becoming
extremely frustrating.
In case it makes a difference here's my system.
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 bit proc 4000+ speed 2412 MHz
C: drive 300 gig
G: drive 150 gig
2 gig ram
video card NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU
Sound card Realtech AC97 Audio
Disc in LITE-On CD-RW SOHR-5239V
I'm running windows xp pro 32 pack 3
I just had the puter set up in november so I can't believe that any of my
drivers are out of date.
I'm not having a overheating problem 2 temp control fans have only kicked on
1 time and it wasn't during game play.
I'm lost any help would bw appreciated.

Hi Tomega,

I noticed you said "| I'm running windows xp pro 32 pack 3"
Uninstall SP 3 and install Service Pack 2 from Microsoft.
Service Pack 3 has not even been tested for release yet.

Thanks for trying to haelp jimmy but I only just installed service pac 3, 2
days ago and the problems started when I bought the games Dec 31,2005....And
as far as service pac 3 not being tested, it was sent to me by microsoft as
an update to service pak 2.....
This isn't the problem

Hi Tomega,

Microsoft sends out security bulletins, but they don't send out
updates by email - especially releases such as service packs.

I hope you run regular Antivirus scans on your system Tomega.

There's some guy posting links to download it in the .general group. I had
to use the caps lock key in the reply. Apparently it's all post-SP2 updates
and no doubt a few nasty surprises.

Well that sounds like a strange one. Couple of things to try:

Full virus and malware scans. www.grisoft.com has a free anti-virus tool,
and Microsoft's anti-spyware is good for malware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Try closing down all other applications when running the games. Press
CTRL+ALT+DEL and click Processes, close down any other process that's
running under your username, don't close down system processes or services.
And make sure any unsaved data is saved before doing this. If you get
success with that, try and narrow the problematic application down.

Lastly, try creating a new administrator account and testing the games with
that. Control Panel -> Users.

The sevics pak 3 didn't come as a email, came as an update that I have
windows check for automatically everyday... But I am wondering if this could
all be happaening because of spellforce which in order to run requires the
use of spyware games arcade. If I recall correctly this all started when I
installed the spellforce game. I don't recall having problems with warcraft
prior to installing spellforce.

Hi Tomega,

That's reassuring to read.. although I suspect you've just installed an
update that is slated to be included in Service Pack 3, similar to how
we were installing individual updates that were to be included later in
Service Pack 2. In anycase, after you've completed a scan, go ahead
and uninstall the Spellforce game which seems to have started the issue.

Thanks both Jimmy and Paul might be awhile before I can get back here and let
you know if it could be caused by other programs running.

Ok have an update for you guys and wanted to thank you for your help because
ultimately your suggestions led to what appears to be the cure.
first I want to appoligise for an erronious impression I left you with, and
that was the service pak 3. Service pak 3 that I had gotten from microsoft
wasn't for windows xp pro, it was for office which had been released.
Ok it would appear after going through a lot of files I found that even
though my video card driver was on my system it wasn't running, so I
reinstalled it and after about 8 hours of continuous play on both previously
mentioned games everything seems to working right. I'm not sure that without
your insistance that the driver was at fault that I would have looked any
farther then just to see that the driver was installed on my computer. So
thanks
Tomega
