Game Server Uses LAN IP Address

Hey, I started playing a new online RPG and for some
reason when I host the server it uses my LAN IP, it shows
up in the game list but people cannot connect to it. I
can host halflife, soldat, and any other game servers
fine. So far 5 people have tried hosting servers, it
worked for 2 of them but not for me. I use ADSL with a
Linksys router, and I've already forwarded the required
ports etc. I just need some help finding out why it is
using my LAN IP and how to fix it. Thanks.

Sometimes there might be an option in a game that says something like, "find
IP address another way". I know Nascar 2003 has that option. Look around
and see if you can find something like that. Otherwise, there might be some
configuration files where you can change things so that a game sees your
real IP.

Also try going to the site of the game and see what is there as far as
forums go and whatnot. It's nearly always useful to do that.

There is also the chance that the ports you forwarded are not the right ones
or something else is wrong. I always found that with my Linksys Router,
port forwarding sometimes worked and sometimes didn't.

Try activating DMZ instead of forwarding ports and see if that works.

Heh, I tried DMZ, I know they are the right ports because
I know the maker of the game. We are both working to
figure this out, he made the network part of the game
directly from a book on making MMORPGs, and tehre are no
options like that you spoke of. For some people it uses
their WAN IP, for me and some others it uses the LAN IP.
I can't figure it out, frustration!

The router is the one who as the Internet IP. Since you PC/game server is
in back of the Linksys router, it can only "see" the LAN IP address.
Somehow, you MUST forward all/any game IP request thorough the Linksys
router. This can be done with port forwarding, where you specify which IP
port to let thorough, or set the game server PC as a DMZ PC.
