Gadget downloads

When trying to download new gadgets I get the warning saying the download is
from a third party and may be invasive to my computer. Is it safe to
download them? Have they been approved by anyone at Mircosoft? I understand
that apple downloadable widgets have been approved by apple and are safe.
Just want to make sure Mircosoft gadgets are safe.

the first 2 trojans that i encountered were from the ms 'marketplace'
portal, downloaded through cnet. stay away from cnet - it's a sewer of rogue
antimalware! i reasoned, as a newbie, that with ms's and cnet's imprimatur,
how can i go wrong? what i didn't realize was that my conception of the
integrity of cnet was all wrong
