Future Windows Upgrade

Will someone with a non-genuine copy of windows xp be able to buy a upgrade
version of Vista or will they have to purchase the full copy?

Hi Matucker,

You will have to purchase Windows Vista full retail package. There is no
upgrade from illegitimate copies. What you can (should) do now is purchase a
full copy of Windows XP now so that you can be legal until Vista comes out.

yes, there was also an offer if the WGA check fails, that one could purchase
XP plus Vista Home-Premium for free = one price for two Windows Packages.

Only if your Key was checked as illegal.
People in Germany found this offer so strange, that on the forums was
discussed how to turn a genuine XP into a Pirated just to can purchse this
deal with Vista for free.

I myself have also considered this, because what Microsoft is trying with
those offers is simply a slap in the face for all honest purchasers.

I am sorry, but that is not true, there has been no sign of genuine
advantage preventing Vista to upgrade existing illegitimate licenses of
Windows XP.

Andre,

It is possible for me to throw a brick through a window of an electronics
store to get a new TV, but that does not make it legal. An upgrade license
is by definition a license to superimpose a newer OS onto an existing
licensed OS. Any other use is illegal.

I am not questioning if the license is legal or not. What I answered was,
can legitimate copy of Windows Vista full version or upgrade license,
upgrade a illegal copy of Windows XP? Yes.

You are then at an advantage to me. Anyone with any Microsoft certification
who counsels someone that it is okay to use a pirated copy for any purpose
risks losing those certifications.

Pirated software is bad for the industry, and there is no legal or
legitimate purpose to it. (Refer my blog post dated 09/06/2006 entitled

Please don't do that, I did not encourage anything (you are insinuating I am
doing so when I am looking at it from theoretical point of view), I did not
say it was ok. All I am saying, its possible, not that I condone it, its
just a reality. Microsoft knows you can do that, but they do nothing about
it to ensure users are upgrading from a legitimate version of Windows or
copy of Windows from the right channel. Why, because it would hurt genuine
consumers in the process and hackers would find a way around it anyway.

The real cause of piracy is mis-use of Volume Licenses by some Corporate
customers. The majority of illegal copies of XP out there on systems are
Professional Edition and they are Volume License. Which means, it came from
a Volume License Agreement, which Microsoft licenses to Company's in good
faith, unfortunately, that trust is sometimes abused. For example, the
infamous FCKG license supposedly came from one of Microsoft's biggest
partners, Dell.

All I want to say is, I do not condone piracy and I never said anything to
come to such a conclusion.
