Funny internet speed problem

I am having a funny problem

I have two Compaq PCs, one on WinXP-home & the other WinXP-pro. I have AVG anti-virus regularly updated & scan my systems. Windows firewall is activated for internet access in both PCS. Also, I have networked the PCs, with WinXP-pro system as host

I use ISP dial-up for internet connection. On the WinXP-home PC (in standalone mode), I am getting normal surfing experience. However, when I connect to the internet from WinXP-pro system (either standalone, or shared) speed is very low, and browsing is a pain. Under shared connection, surfing from WinXP-home PC also suffers similarly. I disconnect shared mode, and connect from WinXP-home PC, and speed returns to perfect

I have recently realised this problem is becoming acute. Any clues, please

Thanks

Okay, I don't have XP anything installed but here's a guess.

Your "Home" PC is behaving like a normal PC while your "Pro" machine is
talking to something on the internet and using up the available bandwidth
doing so.

So there's a lot of possibilities. Is the "Pro" box running any kind of
servers? What about spyware? Could that be the problem. Have you got AdAware
and Spybot?

The fact that the one PC is fine alone and the other (alone or networked) is
not is what's pointing me to lack of bandwidth. Don't want to suggest
anything specific because there's rather a lot of possibilities, including
that I could be entirely wrong.

Could you have a look at services and stop any that are not needed, then
compare what's running on both and see if that provides a clue?

Thank you for your response

I did some google research and also looked at some past posts in this community very deeply. I do have spybot and the scan doesn't show any apparent issue. On top, also did an on-line scan by Panda ... no virus. So, AVG is working fine

Checked the task manager processes too thoroughly

Finally, tweaked my modem setting, and surfing's back to normal :

Thanks again
