Full URL not displaying in status bar

Hi -

When using internet explorer 6.0 the URL address is not
displaying in the status bar - I am only getting "short
cut to index.htm". I have re-installed and downloaded
updated versions - but it still displays "shortcut"
everytime for every link.

Is this a cookie I picked up?

Your index.dat file could be corrupted. Delete it and reboot computer.
index.dat file can be found in Temporary Internet Files > Content.IE5

I tried deleting the index.dat file on my computer. My
computer won't let me. It says that it is being used by
another person, but I closed out of all my applications.
Also, the index.dat file is located in my cookies folder
which is not in my Temporary Internet files - it is in my
documents and settings folder.

How do I delete this file?

Karl,
This is the first I've heard of this. Let me toss out two guesses.

Clear the History from IE> Tools> Internet Options> General.
And from that same tab, you may as well clear the TIF (delete files) and
delete offline content.

Scan for adware, spyware, parasites.

Hope this helps,
