I am not sure what type of issue this is.

I have several programs, games mostly, that try to run in full screen. I
install them without any problems, but when I try to run them in full screen
my display goes blank and blinks its green LED. I have to Alt+Tab to get out,
and then I have to shut down the program. I have a marginal system, with a
2.4ghz P4, 1.5gb 2100 RAM and a 256mb video card.

Any ideas?

What is your monitors highest acceptable resolution?
Do you have the latest drivers (from the hardware manufacturer) installed
for your video card?

2048x1536. I have full sound from the programs, but the monitor goes out, and
it does not crash my compy.

Marginal? That system should be adequite for all but the MOST demanding
games.

It would behoove you, to check the system requirements of all of your
problematic games though, especially the supported video cards list.
Also there are often tweaks listed in the games' readme files.

Check that you are running directx 9.0c, and that your video drivers
are up to date.

Also Shenan's suggestion about your monitor is a good one.

It's to be sure you're not running a game at 1280*1024 and your monitor
only supports 800*600. But that's clearly not the issue here.

The critical issue here is if your video card is listed as supported.
You will have to check the games' websites individually for an updated
list.

Some of them say on the box "Minimim 64 Mb video card", but, when
looking it to detail a brand Z 256MB video card doesn't work with the
game.

That's your best bet for now. After that, you may have to dig DEEP in
the games troubleshooting guides.

After that, you'll have to experiment. If the latest dirver deosn't
work, you may want to go back a few revisions until you find one that
deos. (Be sure you have a backup before you go too deep)

If you ask the right gamer forum, the right question about a particular
game, you may find a workaround. But you have to be specific in IDing
the video card and so on.

Hmm.. *If* you have the latest video driver (from ATI or NVidia I assume -
since you are a gamer) and you have all the latest drivers (chipset,
network, etc) also installed that could affect game performance.. Then
without knowing the games in question (or what settings you have put in
these games) - it would be difficult to help.

You may want to list those games here or even go into their support forums
to see if this is a known issue with DirectX, etc.

With such a resolution - you must have a CRT monitor, eh? (Like a 21"
Viewsonic or something?) Maybe some high-end LCD QXGA..? In other words -
you are not just going by the maximum resolution your video card tells you
that you can do - but what the monitor specifications say it can do?

My suggestion would be to confirm you are running the latest DirectX and
everything tests out okay:
Start --> RUN --> dxdiag --> OK

Download and install the latest drivers from your video card manufacturer
(even if you are SURE you already have it - it won't hurt anything.)

Highest resolution doesn't mean that your monitor will also support it.
According to my knowledge, it is depend on Video Card not on Monitor. Check
your monitor manual or the monitor's packaging box. See whats the highest
resolution your monitor can support.

On one of my PC the highest resolution is 1280x1024. My 15" LG monitor
doesn't support but on the same PC LG 17" monitor works very fine.

I did check on the drivers. I have the latest everything.

These games are not complex. I have had this issue before, but the current
game is Halo Zero which i just downloaded. these games are generally not to
expansive. I have never had a problem with box games, just downloaded ones. I
am running a Radeon 9600 256mb card, and my monitor is a 17" LCD that does
support the full resolution.

I know of no 17" LCD that supports the 2048x1536 resolution.
That would be out of bounds for any 17" monitor I know of - particularly
LCDs.
Your video card would have no problem - but the monitor..

If it scrolls - that is NOT support.

Support for that resolution means you can see the entire screen without
scrolling. Most 17" LCDs (4:3) native resolution is 1024x768 or 1280x1024.
Actually - not only is that usually native resolution for 17" LCDs - but
maximum resolution for said LCDs.

They don't have anything useful. This is not the only game that this has
happened on, and it is the same problem.

One more thing you can check before you call someone. That is your LCD
Monitor drivers. If windows is using "Default Monitor" drivers then it could
also be the reason. The correct resolution also depends on Frequency Hrtz
rate.

See if Window is using Default or Plug and Play monitor then try upgrading
your monitor drivers from the CD that comes with your monitor.

Especially if they're made by the same people. Is there a commonality
between them?
