full memory

HEEELLLPPPP!!! I am rather uninformed regarding the inner workings of this
box in front of me. I was given this comp. w/ XP Pro installed. It had
multiple partitions that weren't in use, and less than 1% available memory. I
deleted the partitions and freed up a little (1.49 GB total, 30.6 MB
available), but I can't open this thing up any further. I've coasted thru it
to the best of my ability, but there seems to be nothing I can do to free up
more space. I realize I'm rolling with a dinosaur (it's a Dell Optiplex GX1),
but currently it's what I can afford. Any and all help will be GREATLY
appreciated

Best bet when getting a used PC is to partition/format fresh, and
instsall the OS of your choice.

By "memory" do you mean Hard disk drive?

Deleting partitions won't free up diskspace. Did you consolidate the deleted
partitions to make a new one or leave them deleted?

Since you sound like a novice I'm assuming you didn't expand you system
partition to fill the rest of the disk, assuming the partitions were on a
single disk.

Rather than me typing out every possible scenario, you should post all of
the specs of the PC.

RAM, number of hard disks, number of partitions and where they reside. What
does disk manager report the disk size as.

Off hand the only thing I would suggest is to make sure all of the temp
directories are emptied, reduce the amount of space reserved for system
restore, recycle bin, and temporary internet cache. - having said that I
would need to know the size of the HDDs and typical usage to be more useful.

Any user file you haven't used in a while could be backed up to a CD/DVD,
flash drive or external HDD.

The way you are presenting your information is not helpful.

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Three points:

1. First of all, please don't confuse memory (RAM) with disk space.
They are two very different things. You are apparently low on disk
space, not memory.

2. You say "I deleted the partitions and freed up a little." Exactly
how did you do that? What partitions did you delete? What was in them?
Note that deleting a partition gives you no more disk space available
in any other partition. It just leaves the space it used to occupy
inaccessible.

3. If I acquired a used computer, the first thing I would do with it
would be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea
how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed
incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be,
etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and
problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend
that anyone else do either.

The third point is the most important one.
