While trying to repair a compaq with a bad keyboard
controller, (installed new MB and Processor) I did a
Repair of XP using a different version. Now it wont take
the original product key. Of course the restore CD's
provided by Compaq wont work, so I cant even restore. The
best solution would be to find a way to get XP to
recognise the original key. Any suggestions?

The original product key was for the Compaq OEM version?
The OEM Compaq restore disks won't work with a non-Compaq
mobo/BIOS.
Buy a new genuine Microsoft OEM CD with its own product key.
This is perfectly legal because of the new motherboard. If
you want to save data on the hard drive buy a retail full
install and do a repair install.
