It depends on the edition.

FTP service is available in Vista Ultimate edition (and also, I think,
Business and Enterprise editions). Go to Control Panel, Programs and
Features, Turn features on or off, Internet Information Services. You'll
find the ftp options there.

Vista Home Edition does not appear to have any FTP service (although it does
have some web server abilities).

Hope it helps,

IIS 7 has FTP capabilities... what version of vista do you have?

what exactly do you want to achieve?

there are other better solutions, thats why I am asking

Hi,

Sure, if you have IIS. It comes in Business and Ultimate, but not Home
Premium or Basic. It will be listed under the Control Panel/Programs and
Features/Windows Features.

Don't use Windows for a FTP server, download and install FileZilla
server, it's free, works real well, secure, doesn't use windows
accounts, and it's stable and you can point it to any folder based on
user/group that logs into it.

Tiberius, you have to be more careful before you say that Andrew is
incorrect on anything. I know that IIS can be installed on Home Premium,
but it has no NTFS authentification, so how would the crappy IIS FTP server
work, as it relies on normal user accounts for the FTP accounts? (This is
the main reason why I think the IIS FTP server is so rubbish)

Look at this page. I have not got Home Premium, and I have not bothered to
look at IIS 7.0 at all, as I only use IIS on my server, which has Windows
Server 2003 installed.

http://207.46.196.114/WindowsServer...ddb7-4423-b1e5-df550e25713b1033.mspx?mfr=true

It says that FTP is not available on Home Premium, which would make sense to
me.

Thanks, Synapse! I didn't see that response from Tiberius; I added him to my
plonk list, long ago.

However, to address his objection ... I said:

"Vista Home Edition does not appear to have any FTP service
(although it does have some web server abilities)".

I believe I was totally correct, there.

Vista Home Premium does include a web server: IIS. This edition provides a
*subset* of IIS features, compared to what you get on Business and Ultimate
editions. For a start, on Vista Home Premium IIS is limited to 3
simultaneous execution requests; compared to 10 on Business & Ultimate; and
unlimited, on the Server version of IIS.

Also, IIS on Home Premium does not support Windows Aauthentication; Digest
authentication; Client certificate mapping authentication; or URL
authorisation. It does not support loging to ODBC sources. Most important
of all, in light of the original poster's question: IIS on Home Premium does
not include any ftp facilities whatever.

So ... I stand by my claim: Vista Home Edition does not have any FTP
service. It does have some web server abilities. It does not have the full
set of web server abilities, as found in IIS on more "serious" editions of
Vista.

I don't see any reason to take Tiberius out of the killfile, based on this
exchange. His posts still seem to be mainly low-value noise.

I do not know.. I dont have home premium. Im just telling you what the pages
say, with the people that have tried it.. The page I gave in the links say
exactly that home premium DOES have all aspects of IIS as long as you use
the special code provided on that page to install it..

I am copy pasting:>>>>

Not so.

IIS 7.0 can be installed, complete, on Home Premium.

Use this script to install every last bit which IIS 7.0 offers :

start /w pkgmgr

Tiberius, do us all a favor, and read Andrew's post.
This is what I have said to you before; you will NOT admit that you are wrong!

Read the pages I provided THEY claim that you DO have all the IIS
as long as you use the SCRIPT to install!

I do not know if I am wrong...I dont have home premium and I dont like home
premium and no one that I know who has home premium would want IIS installed
in the first place! If you try it and you verify that IIS is not installed
compleatly please post your findings. I have no problem saying I am wrong...
Im just trying to make a point that people here are saying that it is
possible.. again read that page I had the link

I am posting here exactlty what they say and dont be to fast in saying that
it is wrong without testing it yourself

Yup and from I found out, it's even on the Home Basic,
the only difference between versions being the number
of concurrent connections allowed, from about 3 to 10.

That's good news for application compatibility :-), 3-5 years
down the road! :-(

Sure - one can find pages on the Internet which claim *anything*. But that
doesn't make them correct.

Google is no substitute for knowledge and experience.

<snip>

Is *that* the evidence you're presenting to support your claim? Can't you
see why it proves you're wrong??

To install ftp, you need to include the packages "IIS-FTPServer" and
"IIS-FTPManagement". These packages are missing from the above command. The
reason why they're missing? Because on Home Premium, they don't exist. There
is no FTP on Home Premium. The above command will install the Home Premium
subset of IIS. It does *not* install the full IIS package, which you would
get on Vista Ultimate or Business.

I regret to say, you're successfully demonstrating you really don't know
what you're talking about here.

It's great that people try to maintain a high level of accuracy in newsgroup
replies; but it only works when their responses are themselves accurate. Why
attempt to contribute to a thread, when you don't have any useful
information to offer?

Now stop that!
I did not claim to know this be personal experience... GESH!
If you hadnt plonked me you would be able to read my replies that I explain
this!

I am just giving the information as I found it

I just had a look at it Tiberius.
All it mentions is IIS 6 Management tools, scripting tools, WMI
compatibility, IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibily.
Plus your WWW services. ASP, ASP,NET, etc

Definitely 6 not 7. That is what comes default with Vista Home Premium

I've temporarily un-plonked you, while we sort this matter out.

The Original Poster asked for info about setting up ftp in Vista. Rick
Rogers and myself both replied to the OP with accurate, useful answers.
Then you replied to both of us, accusing us of giving incorrect
information to the OP.

When pressed, you replied that:
I do not know.. I dont have home premium. Im just telling you what
the pages say

In other words - you didn't actually know first-hand the answer to the
OP's question. You were not in a position to judge whether Rick or
myself were replying correctly or wrongly. And yet, for no goood
reason, you decided to wade into the discussion; which you did by by
recycling irrelevant, misleading information you'd found on a random
web page.

Then you try to excuse this unprofessional behaviour by saying you
don't actually have Home Premium (by implication: you should be
excused, because you weren't to know what you were saying was wrong).

Today you have posted around 40 items to this newsgroup. Very few of
your posts contain useful information - most of them are supposedly
humorous links, personal remarks, low quality generic technical advice,
commentary on Microsoft, etc.

But when someone else does post useful technical information, you tell
them they are incorrect - even when they aren't!

You should re-assess your policy on posting to this newsgroup. You have
a poor reputation here; it would be greatly improved if you posted far
fewer items, and made sure that when you do post, you actually provide
useful, accurate technical information. Especially:

- do not tell other posters they're wrong unless you really, 110%,
*know* that they're wrong;

- do not recycle random info from web pages, as though it was your own
first-hand technical knowledge and experience. People can use Google
for themselves; they ask questions here to find better answers than
that.

I am now placing you back into the plonk file, until I hear some
indication your posts have become worth reading. Currently, your posts
are just an annoying distraction.

I regret needing to speak harshly like this. However, I am not trying
to be rude - everything I've stated above is accurate and sincerely
meant.

Your view is limited... I normaly would not reply ... but here it goes...

I did not insist that I was right in this particular situation.. because I
did not have all the info.. however I did give the info I had in mind,
and gave that to the OP. The OP could read the info and see if it is
correct. I would think that you understand that even YOU could be wrong from
time to time.
And yet, for no goood
reason, you decided to wade into the discussion; which you did by by
recycling irrelevant, misleading information you'd found on a random
web page.

I did not know you thought you owned the thread, I did not wade, I
participated giving information not irrelevant but very relevant
by people who have actually tried it. You are acting very immaturely and I
am glad to be on your plonk list...
Today you have posted around 40 items to this newsgroup. Very few of
your posts contain useful information - most of them are supposedly
humorous links, personal remarks, low quality generic technical advice,

Although your observation is grossly incorrect, I do not think you are in a
position to criticize me. You can post like you like, and I can post in my
own style..
I don't go around telling YOU what to do and how to post and what.

I think my posts are interesting and fun...I am sure also that things I saw
about the quality of vista is correct.

I think you have some need to control this group and the style of the posts.
Who put you in charge?

Its best that you go to a forum and ask to be an administrator.

I don't own the thread. I responded to the OP with a correct answer. That
should have been the end of it, right there.

But after that, you incorrectly accused me of giving a wrong answer. That's
why I'm making an issue out of it. If you had just responded to the OP
without trying to correct both me and Rick Rogers, I might have let it slip
....

The information you gave was not relevant. The OP wanted to know if there
was an ftp server in Vista. Nothing you said provided any useful information
at all about ftp servers in Vista.
did not have all the info.. however I did give the info I had in mind,
and gave that to the OP. The OP could read the info and see if it is
correct.

When you answer a post, you have a responsibility to make sure your
information is accurate and correct. You can't just throw out any old junk,
and hope the OP will somehow pick and choose the right one. What kind of
support is that??

If you correct someone else's answer, you have an extra responsibility to
make sure your information is right. Otherwise you mislead the OP, *and*
show disrespect to your colleagues.

If you post incorrect information, you should acknowledge your mistake and
apologise. That's what I do, when I am wrong. See the recent thread entitled
"Advanced User Options??????????????????" for an example where I made a
technical mistake, and freely admitted it.
Who put you in charge?

No-one. I'm not in charge. I don't care what most people do, and I don't try
to control it.

But ... you accused me of giving incorrect answers. That is why I'm making
an issue of it. If you hadn't falsely accused me of giving out bad info, I
wouldn't bother.
