FTP Problem

I cannot PUT files with FTP to any server. I can GET files
without problem. I can log into servers and do an ls.

My PC is 2.4 GHz Dell, 256 MB of RAM with XP Professional.
I am using Mcafee Personal Firewall. I am FTPing to
several servers of different configurations in various
places to test.

The symptons are that I PUT the file, it appears that the
process starts, but then hangs -- it is as if the file is
being PUT, just never finishes. There are no error
messages -- just an unending PUT. Checking the file on the
other side, I see a file created of exacting 7300 bytes --
every time. The file is, of course, invalid as it is
incomplete.

Here is what I've done so far:

1. I verified that the firewall was allowing ports 20 & 21
in both directions. Logs show that traffic is allowed and
none denied during the session.

2. Even seeing the logs, I disabled the firewall
completely to test.

3. I am fully patched, 100%.

4. I am running Mcafee Anti-Virus with latest .dat files
and nightly full scans -- no viruses/worms to be found.

5. I tested with WS-FTP and IE 6 -- same results.

6. I logged on using a new user profile for a new
administrator-level account. Same results.

7. I put a new computer onto my network connection,
removing my computer. This worked -- no problems on the
new PC.

So, it appears to be specific to my computer, but affects
all local users on it. It doesn't appear to be hardware
related (but I wouldn't rule it out completely) as GET
works, I can copy files to servers, etc. It doesn't appear
to be firewall related as I disable it or verify open
ports through my logs. It doesn't appear to be network-
related as a different computer on this jack works.

So, I am clueless. Any ideas? I would appreciate direct
email.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Set Passive Mode and see if that helps.

Q

Passive mode did the trick. Actual symptoms were REALLY
slow FTP -- I guess that I didn't have the patience to wait
more than 7300 bytes. Letting it go for 2 hours got the
original FTP done, setting to passive mode sped it up
again. Thanks.
