I use FTP to update web sites. All of a sudden, it has stopped working, with
a message saying "Connected to server, waiting for response..." and it just
sits there, for ever.

This happens with all sites I try, so I tend to suspect it's a Windows
related problem. Not sure where or what to look for.

Any ideas anyone?

TIA!

Have you tried a different FTP client?

You don't include enough information to even make an educated guess.
Nonetheless, I will guess that it has to do with your firewall, either
software (Windows or otherwise) or in your router.

What FTP client are you using? What has changed since it last worked
correctly?

If you try another FTP client (what are you using?) including the built-in
command line FTP client, what happens?

I am using LeapFtp. I also installed and tried FileZilla, with exactly the
same results.
I have looked at the firewall and router settings. I can't see anything
changed. Sorry if I am not providing enough info, but I am at a loss here.
Is there a windows update log anywhere in the system? If I could reverse the
latest updates, maybe I could pinpoint the problem.

It's possible, although unlikely, that a Windows Update is the cause of
this problem. However, if you want to check, go to Windows Update (or
Microsoft Update, whichever one you use) and click the link on the left
to "Review your update history."

Double check the settings on your FTP client, and make sure that it is
set to use "passive transfer" or "passive mode."
