Ftp connection

Hi,all

I posted this question in the internet newsgroup and the solutions suggested
didn't work. I have used Filezilla for more than 4 years to upload my sites.
Now I can't connect anymore. I uninstalled it, reboot and installed it
again. Same thing. I installed three other ftp apps and they don't connect
too. I set the windows firewall and NAV to see them as exceptions. I even
tried to connect with NAV auto-protect turned off. Nothing.
Another question is that if I have to download a file from any ftp site
(just like the Symantec Norton removal tool) within IE6, it says page cannot
be found, but I never could do this.
I did a google search, went to the foruns of the apps, did everithyng
suggested and still have the problem. It's been almost two weeks now, and I
was wondering if this has something to
do with the windows updates installed recently. I set the updates to ask
permission, but that doesn't make many difference, I don't know what they
are talking about. I did a research through the kbs installed, but I felt
like a donkey looking at a palace...
Win xp pro sp2, IE6.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance,
Rosana

Do you get any error messages when you try to connect to the ftp sites?

Have you tried using the ftp dos command, can you ping the ftp site you are
trying to access?

I've been uploading via FTP for ten years to about a dozen websites. It
always seems like when I have a problem connecting the webhoster has
changed the name of my upload directory but forgot to give me permission
to upload to it.

Or, they did a restore as a result of a failed hard drive and again,
forgot to add the permissions I need to connect. Seems to my like a
question for your webhoster.

Hi!
All the apps I try to connect to upload my sites just say this: "socket
error no connection", nothing more, not even a number. I can use MSN
Messenger and LimeWire, so I don't really understand what can I do to solve
this horrible situation. Maybe some service are disable, I don't know what
else to think. In IE I can't connect at all, but I wouln't like to, anyway.
I'm sorry, but I have no idea how to use ftp dos command or what is to
"ping" the ftp sites...
Thanks,
Rosana

Hi,
I'm driving my host support crazy, and they are driving me nuts as well, for
keep saying "I tested yous sites today with all these clients you mention
and the test was ok, no problem at all. Maybe it's your connection, bla bla
bla...." I don't care if they can connect, the problem is that I can't, and
they don't have the files I need to upload. I hate the CPanel they offer and
I'd rather change my host then use it.
Thanks,
Rosana

Hi Rosana,

The last time I saw something like what you describe, it was
because the Windows Firewall got turned on and was not
allowing the FTP port. Occasionally, I will have people
complain that after a Windows update that the Firewall was
in fact on though they had had it off because they were
using a third party firewall

Hi!

This is interesting, I'll try to disable the windows firewall and let you
know. There must be something and I'm mad at me because I can't figure it
out. It's so frustrating...
I liked your Ciao, even if this is an Italian word. My English must be bad,
but I'm trying. Here in Brasil "bye" is "Tchau".

Thanks for your attention!

HI!!!!

You won't believe it: I'm so excited: after a long time, I could
connect!!!!! I'm so happy! I disabled the windows firewall and voilá! My
good old fpt worked like a charm! How can that be? It means the exceptions
are bogus? And there's no problem if I disable it?

Thanks a lot!!!!!

Hi,
It' almost 3a.m. down here, and I must sleep, but I'd like you to know that
I even could download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec, which has an
ftp address and I have never been able to before. It was the first time IE
worked with fpt link.
My concern is: can I disable the firewall for good? Why the exceptions don't
work for ftp?

Thank you very much for your attention.

One of the hints that this may be the case is if the system
won't let you see or edit the Windows firewall setting.

Your English is fine. I haven't been to Brasil in more than
30 years (I never did learn the language (what can I say us
Americans think EVERYONE should speak American-English <LOL>)).

If that is indeed the problem, I think I saw a message here
a few months back about gaining access to the firewall settings.

Hi Rosana,

It is 'normally' recommended that you only run one firewall
at a time. I read NAV and assume you are using the suite. If
not, I would recommend that you install either ZoneAlarm
Firewall (NOT the suite) or Comodo.

ZoneAlarm has a free and a commercial version. I use the
'Pro' version, but my clients (mainly NPOs) have had no
trouble with the free version.

You might also consider getting a different AV since Norton
is a notorious resource hog.

The address listed here is my real address so if you have
any questions, please feel free to write.

You should never go online without a firewall. There are 3rd party
firewalls such as Comodo Personal Firewall (free), Sunbelt Software's Kerio
Personal Firewall ( free and paid), and Zone Alarm (free and paid).

Hi,

I'll try one of the suggested and I only hope they allow my ftp. It's a
strange behavior since the windows firewall allow my Limewire and MSN
messenger and the ftp apps don't. They are all in the exceptions list. I'd
never figure it out.
I have Norton Sistem Works 2005 but only NAV is installed. I've been using
it for many years, I think I tried AVG once and went back to Norton. I never
had any problem at all. I read some of the posts in the newsgroups and it
seems a lot of people have problems with it. It doesn't scan my e-mail, and
didn't prevent me for using my ftp like the windows firewall did.
One thing that I think is strange is that under "services" a "Norton
AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service" is listed, but I don't think this is
part of NAV and also there is a "Firewall do Windows/Compartilhamento de
Conexão com a Internet (ICS)", both of them configured to automatic and
running.
I'll keep your address, just in case...

Thank you for your help and attention,
Rosana

You're welcome. Yes, disable the windows firewall if running a 3rd party
firewall. As a general rule only one firewall should be running.

Hi!

I don't know, it's confusing, because I can use Limewire and MSN messenger

Thanks for the advices, you were very kind.

I found out that the "Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service" is related
to the block worms whitin the NAV, so it's ok, I think. I installed Comodo
and it really allows me to connect to my ftp sites. The only thing that
scares me is that it keeps me asking about allow or deny something and I'm
afraid to do so, because I don't know if it's safe, which action I must
take. But I think I'll learn by try and error.

Thank you very much for your advices and your time,

Hi!

I disable the "worms" thing in NAV, disabled the Comodo firewall, went back
to windows firewall and its exceptions and all ftps apps worked fine! I
don't know why this happened, because I've always used both and it was ok.
Comodo works fine with NAV "worms" enabled.
Now my only question is whether I keep Comodo (with NAV worms enabled) or
the windows firewall (with NAV worms disabled). Can I have your opinion
about which one is safer?

Thanks,
Rosana
