FTP client for dummies

Hello...

I need to have employees at my company use an FTP client. Some
of them are very shy around computers. I'm looking for a "FTP
for dummies" client that's friendly, easy, and
self-explainatory.

CuteFTP is too much for some of these emps, if that gives you
any idea of what I'm up against.

Any suggestions?

Thx,
D.

SmartFTP? If you show them how to tile the windows and how to
connect to the server, it is pretty much drag and drop...

What should they do with their ftp-client ?
As for simplicity: even Internet Explorer is an ftp-client.

Not bad. I like how the interface is similar to Explorer.
I'll give it a spin.

Thx,

Filezilla is easy to use - I had never downloaded a file from an ftp site before & and it only
took me a few minutes to get the hang of it. http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

I like Core FTP. Works with drag-and-drop or right-click, fast & easy :)

Internet Explorer might not be great, but it will probably be a familiar
way (and thus less time spent training) for the "non-technically"
inclined people to access company FTP sites.
All those suggested have a similar layout, including my favorite, FTP
Explorer-
http://www.ftpx.com/
"FTP Explorer is a file transfer protocol client for Windows
9x/ME/2000/XP and NT 4.0, that looks and acts very much like the Windows
Explorer, offering a fun way to FTP...
Features-

a.. Download or upload files to one or more servers while browsing and
selecting files to transfer on another. That's right!, FTP Explorer
handles all file transfer requests in the background, so you don't have
to wait while files copy to continue browsing the current server. You
can even connect to a different server, and the program will
automatically log off of the original server once the requested transfer
has completed.

b.. Can't connect? Not to worry. FTP Explorer will automatically retry
if the connection attempt fails. You can configure the number of times
it should try to connect, and the time delay between connection
attempts.

c.. Support for resuming interrupted file transfers. FTP Explorer
attempts to resume a file transfer if it detects a file with the same
name in the current download directory. This can save you time and
connection costs for those troublesome connections. (Note: not all ftp
servers support this option.)

d.. No more searching through that index file for the entry you're
looking for. FTP Explorer can automatically download and display the
proper description of each file with the file that it describes. As an
option, the program will automatically download the index file on the
server and display the file descriptions next to the appropriate files
while you browse. Several standard index file formats are currently
supported.

e.. The new Transfer Manager allows you to ascertain the details of
download or upload requests at a glance. The source, destination, and
status of each request is detailed in the Transfer Manager window to
keep you apprised of multiple connections, and make it easy to see which
files have been transferred.

f.. Create file or directory FTP shortcuts on your desktop to launch
FTP Explorer and automatically connect to your most commonly visited FTP
sites.

g.. Like icons? Like descriptions? No problem. FTP Explorer uses the
Windows 95 style list boxes for displaying the contents of remote
servers. Toggle between large icons, small icons, lists, or full
descriptions of the files you are browsing. Its intelligent tree view
learns the directory structure as it goes.

h.. Windows 95 style right-click menus keep options at your
fingertips. The most commonly used options are only a mouse click away.
Menu options change based on the type of file or directory that is
highlighted.

i.. Intelligent Command Queue enables background completion of each
command, so you don't have to wait on directory listings!. Once
connected to a server, FTP Explorer maintains a list of commands to
carry out which makes listing files and searching the server much
faster. Select the directories that you want to browse as soon as you
connect, and FTP Explorer will go to work downloading the directory
information and listing its contents in the background while you
continue to browse. As each directory listing is completed, its color
changes to let you know you can view it without any delay.

j.. This thing caches it all! Each connection is cached in memory, so
moving back one or more directory takes a fraction of the time that is
necessary with most FTP programs. It also has an option to cache entire
sites so that you may peruse the site off-line, then automatically
connect when a download or upload us initiated.

k.. The Quick Connect option lets you immediately connect to a site
without having to go through the usual song-and-dance of adding a site
to the profile list.

l.. Support for fpArchie is also included with FTP Explorer.

m.. Full Drag and Drop support. Simply drag one or more files or
complete directory structures -- onto the FTP Explorer's file view area
to transfer them to the location of the server that is currently
connected. Receiving files is also as simple as dragging one or more
files (or directories) onto your desktop, or any other folder."

Then why don't you just use IE?
It's been so long that I've been using CuteFTP that I din't stop
to consider IE. I'll experiment with uploadind and downloading
with it as soon as I can.

Thx,
D.

Go into your properties->advanced and make sure you have the option checked
to use IE as an FTP interface. Once that is done you can either enter an
ftp addy into the address box or from the start->run box. If you need
user/pwd to enter an ftp server use the format...

For just upping files to a site, I highly recommend SendTo FTP. One click on
the file to be sent does it! You simply must try it.

For a regular FTP program, I recommend Pablo Van Der Meer's "FTP Wanderer".
It's as simple and reliable as it comes. 1 file, no install, works great.

Bob,

I DLed it, and blush to report I can't make it work.

It says it's successfully connected to the site, then that it's closing FTP
session, then clsing Internet session.

Can I please get help?

Many thanks,

It could be something specific to the site.

Have you tried PASV both off and on?

Is the site anonymous, or does it require a specific login and password?
Even some anonymous sites require a certain type of login name, such as an
e-mail type name.

How about the starting folder? Many sites put the root folder off limits.
Are you starting in a folder in which you are authorized?

If it's a public site, give me the particulars and I'll be happy to trouble
shoot it for you.

Any standard download software should have FTP client features
also. " Total Commander " also can do .

Never had a problem downloading though, and the prog size is nice.

For occasional FTP jobs I just use Internet Explorer. Single thread and

I recommended FTP Wanderer because he wanted an easy one. My personal
favorite is WSFTP LE. I keep coming back to that one because it has
never failed me no matter which site or authentication method I have had
to use.
