FTP, and passive responses

How do I get the FTP server from within XP Pro to provide
passive responses with an IP address I specify. Sometimes
I need to FTP files from behind a NAT firewall.

I can not figure out a way to get XP to respond with the
IP address the VPN server gives me instead of the IP
address my Linksys router gives me.

You don't. The PASV response given by the FTP server should represent its
opinion of the IP address and port. Remember that NAT should really be NAPT
- the address _and_ port are translated, and if you only translate one, you
are simultaneously skipping the NAT's ability to translate it, and providing
the client with the wrong port number.

The Linksys router knows your external address, as well as having to create
a mapping from the external port number to the internal port number. As a
result, it _must_ intercept and modify the PASV response in order for it to
be correctly translated.

There are several FTP servers out there that offer the feature to set the IP
address in PASV responses, but such features are dangerous to use, because
they may cause your client to connect to ports for which they have not been
authenticated.
