Frozen Unlock Screen

The following has happened 3 or 4 times. Normal operation can be recovered
by a power-off reboot, but I'd like to know the cause, so that I can avoid
future occurences.

WinXP Pro, sp2 with current updates

2 user profiles, with fast user switching turned on

no password set for either user account

system set to turn monitor off after 15 minutes and to power-down (standby)
after 3 hours

system wakes from standby (not hibernation, which has been disabled) with
"system is locked; only admin or <username> can unlock" dialog box with
userid correctly filled in and one or two characters (dots) filled in in the
"password" box

no response to any keyboard input (can't make any changes to "password"
and can't use control-alt-delete to re-boot)

only recourse is to turn power off. Subsequent reboot restores normal
operation.
 
Hi,

The keyboard driver is not properly supporting the standby function. Your
best bet would be to check for an updated version.

That might explain why the keyboard can't be used to enter a password or
c-a-d, but why is the "locked" screen coming up at all, when the user profile
is not password-protected? 99 times out of 100, the system wakes from
standby to the "Welcome" screen, where you can click on a user profile.
Only a very few times does the system wake from standby to the "this system
is locked" screen.

Doesn't matter if the account is passworded or not. There are two settings
that will cause a system to prompt for a password or display the Welcome
screen when the system comes out of standby:

Control Panel/Display/Screensaver tab, uncheck "On resume, display welcome
screen"
Control Panel/Power Options/Advanced tab, uncheck "prompt for password when
computer resumes from standby"
