FrontPage2003 hangs when updating photo gallery

G

Guest

I'm just a home user trying to construct a photo gallery, but every time I
try to add to, or edit, the gallery FP2003 opens a Progress Dialog box
"Generating thumbnails for photo gallery" and hangs. I have to Alt-F4 to get
out.

1. Do you have a site open first?
2. Did you import all images to be used in the photo gallery into the current open web prior to
trying to create the photo gallery?

No, I didn't have my Web site open, and I didn't upload the photos to the Web site ahead of time.

Well, you need to have the site open in FP, then you need to import all images to be used, then you
can create the photo gallery.

Look at several previous posts about the photo gallery component today.

I uploaded the photos to the Web site and then tried to create a photo gallery in FP, but the same hangup occurred. What am I doing wrong? I only know how to construct a page and then upload it to my site.

To create a Photo Gallery in FrontPage:
Open FrontPage.
Create a new empty folder and name it gallery1 ( or what ever you want to name it )
Import your images into gallery1.
Create a new blank page in gallery one and save it. It will be named index.htm this is normal.
Then start the photo gallery component in this new blank page.

No help. Here's what I'm doing. I open FP, I open the folder containing the files that make up my Web site, I open the Web page where I want the photo gallery to appear. This page has a layout table and layout cells. In one of the cells I Insert/Web Component/Photo gallery, etc. Then I follow directions and start putting the photos in the gallery. These photos are located in a subfolder of the Web site folder (does this mean my site is open?) I'm still getting lockup when I try to either add new photos--not from outside the Web site--or edit existing photos.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Thank you! This worked.

Well, I spoke too soon. I opened a new folder, put all the photos in it,
created a new page (and saved it into the new folder), then started building
the gallery, but the same thing happened. As soon as I edited the second
photo FP hung while generating thumbnails.

So this didn't solve the problem.

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and download the FP Cleaner utility.
run the functions to clear the FrontPage Temporary files and the Cache{.web} files.

Then try it again.

I did, but FP Cleaner didn't solve the problem.

The files are 600k to 750k. The pictures are JPEG. I have 512MB RAM.

Resize & optimize your images PRIOR to Importing them into FP. You want to resize them to the size your want for the BIG picture...FP will generate the little thumbnails so you don't need to do that.

If you don't have a program to do this you can download (free) IrFanview at http://www.irfanview.net it can batch process, resize, optimize all in one shot.

600-700K images are TOO big.

Thank you, that was helpful knowledge. I resized all the photos, and
started the gallery over, but the same thing happens. I open a new gallery,
I put in the first photo (all photos are in the Web site), the I add a second
photo and click OK. FP says "generating thumbnails" and hangs.

Do I just have a defective application?

You could try running a Detect and Repair - it's under the Help Menu.

Have you applied Office 2003 SP1 to your PC?

Yes, I did Detect and Repair, and I re-installed the entire application when
that didn't help; and I installed SP1 for FP. I can't think of anything I
haven't done.
I just bought the application in February, and this is the first time I've
attempted a photo gallery.

If server has FP extensions, open the site live and make sure you don't have any of the previous attempts (the image files) still on there...delete them live.

Close the live site.
Open FP on your local machine.
Delete your previous attempts at generating the gallery...all the images except the ones in the folder that you Imported.
Run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks
Close FP

Download Steve Easton's FPCleaner: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and run that on your local machine with FP closed.

Now Open FP and Open your Web/Site and try to regenerate the gallery, then Re-Publish.

just for giggles I went in and made a page with photo gallery. I hadn't
tried on this version (2003) before I used an older version of FP.
Contrary to some other advice I use the browse feature, I never import the
folder to the web first. When I save the page the little box comes up and
asks if I want to save the images in the web, check yes, works 100%
perfectly for me.
