FrontPage to Expression Web Transition

K

Karine

Since FrontPage has been discontinued I upgraded to Expression Web. Now
that I've upgraded I'm feeling a bit lost becaue the tools I'm accustomed to
using don't appear to exist in Expression Web. I'm accustomed to using
themes, borders, navigation view and picture gallery, etc. What
replacements are there for these tools in Expression Web and how do I go
about making the transition?

I would also like to know - especially picture gallery i used it a lot in FP,
but since it's not in expression - If someone would explain how to upload a
photoshop web photo gallery to my expression web site i would be very very
very happy.
Thanks

Basically, all that stuff is gone. It produced horrible code, even though it
did make some tasks easier. The old ones made with FP will still work with
EW, but you cannot make new ones.

Most of those have much better 3rd party replacements. The Photo Gallery
especially in FP was always really horrible, and Borders are something that
Microsoft should have been shot for.

The bad part is, to progress much you will probably have to learn some basic
CSS at the least.

Is there an alternative to learning CSS? I really liked all of the WYSIWG
features of FrontPage and that's why I used it. I really want to be able to
do the same types of WYSIWG things in Expression Web.

First setup up ew.

Setting up Expression Web Ebook ( Fr*ee )
http://frontpage-ebooks.com/expression-web-ebooks.htm

I'd read this it contains a lot info about revamping your pages and also how
to make a dwt which is like a theme.

NEW Expression Web DWT fr*ee Ebook
http://frontpage-ebooks.com/dwt-ebook.htm

http://www.ornj.net/
This is the best I've found photogallery wise

Photoshop ... just read the photoshop HELP ..... it tells you how ..
basically you point to the place you want to get the graphics FROM ... and
then point to the place you want the photogallery made IN. ... this is what
I use but not every one has photoshop hence the above link.

themes - dwt see above

formatting - css ... ew will automatically make the code in somewhat better
manner but if you want really good coding you still have to know what your
doing using the setup ebook first before you do anything will help.... then
just continue as you normally would when you use the formatting toolbar ew
will make those styles for you, all a bit messy but if you don't want to
learn anything more that's your best bet.

If you do want to learn a little more css this is not for ew but gives you a
general idea

FrontPage and CSS

http://accessfp.net/frontpage-2003/tutorials/information-about-css.htm
http://accessfp.net/frontpage-2003/tutorials/creating-css.htm

shared borders - these were discouraged from use in fp03 even .... and
includes have been around since fpe (frontpage express) Design Time Includes
is what you want to know about... as for the nav bot you don't have any
control overy your menus anyway... producing hand typed menus using includes
within a dwt is much much much better... I've been using them since fp2000
when I suddenly realised what little control I had over my menus.

Design Time Includes
http://any-expression.com/expression-web/tutorials/insert-include-pages.htm

hit counter - spit ... only your server gives accurate stats but use a
tracker icon instead there are plenty of free ones that also have a counter
but again not accurate the fp one is extremly bad.

the first three tutorials are on migrating which might be of some help... to
remove themes easily you need fp ... you can keep fp on the same machine as
ew.

You don't NEED to learn CSS, but I would definately recommend learning some
basic formatting stuff.

You can use EW as a WYS editor, but in doing so you are only using about 20%
of what it can do. However, the downside is that there is a learning curve.

If you like FP then stick with it. Just because the application will no
longer be supported doesn't mean you can't continue to use it. For a long
time you will be able to find a host that supports FP extensions. Just keep
in mind that at some point in the future (2, 5, 10 years - who knows) it
will be extremely difficult to locate a host supporting FP extension and you
will have no choice but to change.

Having said that, you can stick with FP, but I wouldn't recommend it. Take
the time now to start learning the technologies that drive websites and you
will be setup for whatever the future brings. Just have your FP version
running and start creating a non-FP version to learn with. Keep the two
sites side by side that way you won't be overwhelmed with the learning curve
and fail to provide updates to your websites.

You can create wysiwyg styles in Expression web it is a matter of learning
how to do so. Themes are replaced with CSS which is much better since the
file size is so much smaller and the pages load quicker. You also aren't
relying on code that may only work in Internet Explorer (for Windows since
not all of it worked on the IE for Macs either.)

Shared borders are replaced by DWTs - which were in FrontPage 2003 as well.
Themes by CSS
Navigation that one is harder but I use lists and style them with CSS, lots
of sites on the internet will generate the basic format for you and then you
just add list items.
Photo Gallery - sucked really bad since the pages may or may not work in any
browser other than IE (depending on which you choose). If you have the
Studio Expression Media creates Photo Galleries you can use and we also have
a list of some our forum members like at

My question was "how do you upload a photoshop web photo gallery?" is that
not possible?

Generate the PS album into a folder outside of EW, then Import the entire
folder into EW.

Thank you to everyone for your input and suggestions. I'll definitely take
the information and see what I can do with it.

I wish, however, that Microsoft would consider that there are still those of
us that want to go entirely the route of WYSIWYG and build a web tool
accordingly.

What makes you feel it's necessary to change, then? You can still use FP
2003 if you choose..it'll be supported for several more years.

I don't like using products that have been discontinued and I know host
providers aren't going to support FrontPage extensions indefinitely so I
need to make the transition.

While the FP software might be supported by MS for a while, already a lot
hosts are dropping FPSE support.
