Front panel 'phones with P4P800 Deluxe

I can't find the answer to this question in the manual or CD. I have
a case (Coolermaster Centurion CAC-TO1) with front panel connections
(Firewire, USB, mic & headphones). I can't seem to find how or where
to connect on the mobo. If I plug into the front panel connector
header Line Out what will hapen to my speakers connected to the jack
on the back panel? There's not much info in the manual about how the
funky "auto-detect" feature works. IF I can connect BOTH phones in
the front & spkrs in the back--will the spkrs be muted when the phones
are plugged in??
Any experiences you can relate would be appreciated.

I have the Asus P4P800 which is the same as your board minus the
firewire and additional IDE raid set. I was able to hook up the front
panel connectors of my Antec Sonata to the MB. When I have the
earphones plugged in, the front speakers are muted. The back speakers
do not get muted though. (Not a problem for me as I can turn them off
seperately.) Although if you have plugs in the front for back
headphones as well, they will probably be muted as well but I cannot
comment on that.

The auto detect feature is part of the driver set. When it detects
devices plugged into the back panel on bootup, it asks what device it
is (ie. front speakers, rear speakers, line in etc.) and lets you
choose. Once set you can turn the auto detect off.

Good luck.

Did you remove the 2 jumpers on the mb for f/r lineout? I was afraid
doing so would cut the path to the back panel...

Cool.
You're saying that after the mb detects the peripherals I can disable
auto-detect and the mb will still know whether headphones are being
plugged in (and mute the back panel speakers)? That would be even
better than I expected :)

This brings up a question (for anybody): In a more/less standard
install how many apps are running in the background that are
attributable to the mb? ON my old slow system I always tried to keep
hidden apps & processes to a minimum. With all the bells & whistles
out there now I can envision a taskbar that stretches all the way
across the screen.

With XP you can customize the task bar to hide the icons. You can
hide all the time, show when active or show all the time. This way it
cuts down on the clutter.

I have 7 on the task bar:
Norton Internet Security
Norton Antivirus
Alcohol
Soundmax Control Panel
Volume Control
UPS/Power Status Icon
and K9.

All are hidden until I show them.

Similar problem - can you provide any insight?

P4P800-VM mobo
P4 2.6C processor
generic case with two front-panel sound jacks. The jacks are not
labeled, so I presume one is MIC and one is EAR
Two-speaker audio -- I don't have additional speakers
brand-new installation

On-board sound using the back-panel jack was working properly
Disconnected the two jumpers on the mobo audio pin block
Connected the EAR-L and EAR-R leads for the front-panel jacks to the
LINE-L and LINE-R (not BLINE-L and BLINE-R) of the audio pin block
(cannot remember the other connections - I am not at the PC right now)

Back-panel audio was muted
Front-panel audio was working

Disconnected the front-panel cable and re-installed the jumpers
Back-panel audio was working properly

Is this normal behaviour for the audio? I would like to have a
permanent connection to the back panel jacks and "live" front-panel
jacks for occasional headphone use. Doesn't matter to me whether the
back-panel speakers become muted when the headphones are being used.
Is this feasible, and if so, which pins on the audio block do I use.

Thanks

Finally got 'round to trying this. Doesn't work. At least not with
the jack wiring I have. The front headphone jack is the type that
completes the circuit when not in use--but there are no return wires
to plug into the board. I'll have to add the additional 2 wires for
this to work. Removing the jumpers without this change leaves the
back jack disconnected from the signal.

Sorry to hear that it does not work. I guess my headphone jack does
not comptelete the ciricuit when not in use. By the way, did you have
to plug each wire in seperately for your case front panel hook ups.
Each wire for the Antec Sonata has to be plugged in seperately.

Yeah--seperate pins. I don't get this either--as I understand it the
headers are pretty much standard. I suppose sep. pins DO give you at
least a little flexibility. I called Coolermaster (they make the
Centurion case I'm using) and complained there was an error in the
wiring & asked them to send out a replacement. When it arrives I'll
cannibalize it for the 2 wires I need. That way they'll be the
correct length & have connectors already crimped on.

I haven't tried the firewire jack yet--another common source of
miswires.

I guess this all puts the 'hobby' back into building pc's, eh?
LOL
