So heres my situation...I have a computer that a friend and i built. I am
currently running XP Pro on it. I was unaware, however that when he put XP
Pro on my machine he used a key generator, and it is now flagging as an
invalid key. So now i can not run any updates on IE (though i never use) WMP
or any of the security features. GRR! I still have my original copy of XP
home with a valid key that i had used prior. Windows will not let me
"downgrade" XP. I have too much at this point on my hard drive to have to
back up to wipe and run a fresh install. (its one of those "its not gonna
happen till i have to replace my HD" things) Is there any way to work around
that so that i can get XP Home on there with the Valid Key? Or am i really
stuck with the only option of a clean install?

The latter. There is no way to downgrade.

You can always use an external hdd and transfer your files to that then do a
clean install. or if you have a second internal drive transfer to it then
clean install. I agree with Ken, a clean install is the only way.

On another note you may want to check that it is Windows that is invalid. I
upgraded several computers for a customer from win 2000 to win xp and could
get updates due to their office 2003 was invalid, uninstalled Office then
installed a valid copy of Office and now updates fine.

No, i know for a fact that its windows. After having the issues i talked to
that friend and he informed me it was a copy of XP Pro that he used a key
generator. Punk. Oh well. I guess one of these days i will just do a fresh
install, which isnt that bad i suppose, its just my games, etc that are
rediculous to reinstall...

I'm afraid that the only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home
is to format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade
path or technique.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation,, simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll
be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order
of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.
