I am far from being an expert and that is why I want to play safe. I have
windows 98 in my desktop and want to migrate to windows xp professional. How
difficult or how easy is it? Am I too naive in believing that all I need to
do is put the CD and follow straight forward instructions? thank you

lt,

the difficulty of installing windows xp would be relative to any person. i
don't want to be rude nor do i intend to. but i think it is relatively
easy. windows xp installation comes with a wizard that will guide you
through the installation process. there will always be an instruction on
what to do and always, you will just have to read the instructions and
follow directions. there will be options on what to do next. so it is very
less likely that you are going to make any mistake. when in doubt, just
read the instructions over again. ;-)

it would also be best if you have a friend beside you whom you can trust who
have had an experience installing winxp. that would surely help and put you
at ease, even for a bit.

good luck.

dennis

the main thing you will have to do is to BACKUP. All your documents,
email, any program setup files you have downloaded etc etc just in case.
An Upgrade SHOULDN'T cause a problem but it is better to be on the safe
side.

I too have windows 98 running on an HP Pavillion and
purchased XP Home Edition thinking all I had to do is drop
in the CD and follow instructions. Noooo - it has turned
out to be more difficult for me. I did a dynamic upgrade,
and received a four page report of incompatibilities.
First, I needed to search for and download new drivers for
just about everything. Now, I am working on, but am still
hung up on, finding drivers for my modem and audio and
video controllers. I also have 6 or so programs that have
to be removed before install due to incompatibility.
Before purchasing, you may want to check out Microsoft's
site for all XP info - they also explore compatibility
issues. Start at www.microsoft.com and look for references
for XP and the Microsoft Windows Compatibility List. I
don't mean to discourage you - and maybe you won't run
into the same problems I have. I just wish I had done
more research before buying!
