I ahve a computer currently running windows 98 and would like to upgrade to
xp. It has a 300mhz intel celeron processor woth 128mb of ram. It also has a
7200 rpm 20gb hard drive. I have a diampond viper graphics card wioth 16mb of
ram. HOw would xp run on this machine? i could add more ram if neccasary. Do
you think i would be happy with the performance of it?
Thank you in advance for the help

Depends on what you want to use it for.

It may be possible, but I wouldn't call it a "good idea." As for
performance, the word "glacial" comes to mind, if the computer doesn't
have a CPU of at least 500 MHz along with at least 256 Mb of RAM. Yours
meets the bare minimum requirements to install WinXP; I certainly
wouldn't want to actually have to use such a machine.

Acceptable performance is, of course, a matter of personal opinion
and depends entirely upon what *you* expect to do with your computer. If
all you want to do is play WinXP's built-in games, send and receive
simple emails, browse the Internet (while avoiding the more "ornamental"
web sites) etc., such a machine may well meet your needs. If, however,
you plan to take advantage of WinXP's multimedia capabilities, play
graphic-intensive games, or do advanced word or data processing, such a
machine would probably be woefully inadequate.

If you turn off all of WinXP GUI eye-candy, it will still be very
slow, but it might be usable for simple word processing, email,
web-browsing, etc. It won't be any good for graphics-intensive
applications, and most newer games. (During the public preview period,
I tested WinXP on a 500 MHz machine with 256 Mb of RAM, and it was much
slower than I like.)

To help improve WinXP's performance on older machines:

1) Right-click the Task Bar > Properties > Start Menu, ensure "Classic
Start menu" is selected.

2) Right-click an empty spot on the Desktop > Properties > Themes >
select "Windows Classic."

3) Right-click My Computer > Properties > Performance > Settings >
Visual Effects, ensure "Adjust for best performance" is selected.

It will run slowly if at all. I have no idea about what you would think,
but I certainly would not like it.

My mum is currently using a Celeron 266 with 256mb ram and 32mb Screen Card

I have openoffice v1 Corelv8 and the UI gui effects still all on.

Removed practically every feature that makes XP a bit bloated - Type
Msconfig and remove everything unnecessary, including the biggest culprit and
that's the indexing service.

Note - I do reccomend 265mb ram though. -
I tryed the same thing on a celeron 500 with only 128mb and it was a slow
poke.

It would run terribly.128MB of RAM is not sufficient for doing much more
than playing solitaire under Windows XP.

If you do decide to this, by all means upgrade to at least 256MB of RAM, but
you are still stuck with the 300MHz processor, and the 20GB hard drive.
Performance will be better, but still very poor. You could also upgrade the
processor/motherboard and the hard drive, but it very seldom makes any
economic sense to do this. If you have to upgrade so many things, almost
certainly it would be cheaper and better to buy a whole new computer from
someone like Dell. They are often as little as $300.
