From field is displaying '??' when sender's character is in Chines

I'm running English version of Windows XP and MS Office 2003 and regularly
receive emails from friends in China. My outlook 2003 is displaying the
character '??' in the 'FROM' field when sender's email is in Chinese
character. I can open up the email and the content is displaying in Chinese
so it is just the 'FROM' field that is not showing properly. Could someone
please help in resolving this problem?

Do you know what email program your friends are using? This is probably
the fault of that program, which supposed to encode those characters
according to Internet email standards. That is probably not happening, but
your friends don't see that when sending to each other because their
computers are set to work in Chinese. Any computer not so set will have
problems with improperly encoded encoded fields.
