Fresh XP Pro Installation Runs Slow

I was having various chronic on my 4 year old XP installation, so I
decided to just start over. I have reinstalled and installed about a
hundred or so updates. I've only installed a few programs. One is a
utility I use several times daily. Before the reinstallation it
closed quickly. It took no more than 1-2 seconds after I clicked
Exit. Now it takes 45-50 seconds to shut down. Also other apps seem
slow. It takes 3-4 times as long for the browser to start.

Anybody know what could be causing this?

Are the latest hardware drivers installed?
Are you using a slipstreamed CD with SP2?
Motherboard chipset drivers, video drivers, sound drivers etc.
