French characters on web

Hi
I have created a french page on my web site
now the characters only show if IE has encoding set to
user defined
now does this work with certain html version or not all?
Do I need to use a particular format ? or particular
browser settings or version?

You need to go to Tools > Page options for that page and set the default language under Font
Settings.

Go to http://www.dipika.org/~exp/frenchtest.htm and see if you can read the
French characters there. They should work if you set your encoding to
Western European (Windows). I did not do anything special to create the
page.
