freezing sub-menus

I'm having trouble navigating sub-menus in any and all applications.

When I choose a menu item, a drop-down is exposed, which contains many
sub-menus. However, it's necessary to exactly move the mouse horizontally
across the sub-menus to keep them exposed. If the mouse deviates even the
slightest off the horizontal, then the sub-menu above or below is displayed.
When the sub-menu items are quite wide, this makes it difficult to
effectively navigate the menu structure.

This is very different from Xwindows, where a selected menu item stays
exposed regardless of where the mouse is pointing.

Is there a setting somewhere that can change this behaviour, please?

Sounds like a hardware issue. I'd look at the graphics adapter and or mouse
and drivers for each.

No, there's not a way to alter this behaviour.
You might try using the keyboard to navigate the menu structure.
