freeze up when attaching document (2003)

When I attach a document it takes upwards of 20 minutes for the process to
complete. The rest of the program runs as it should, the only hang up is
when attaching the document.
Can someone help?

How large is the document?
Is your antivirus scanner integrated with outlook?
