I'm using workbooks created about ten years ago in Lotus
123 and quatro which have be translated many times
through MS dos and windows without any problems. However,
since I changed to Excel 2002 XP when I freze panes it
only lasts until I exit Excel. The next time I open Excel
the freeze panes has to bedone over. Is this normal? If
not, then should I create new worksheets (hundreds
ofthem) and dump my data into them?

If I remember correctly, Freeze Panes did not exist ten years ago. Your
message does not say whether you have saved any of the Excel documents in
Excel 2002/XP. You can open documents created and saved in earlier versions
of Excel even though they may not have been saved in the current version.
Try saving one of them (press F12, select "Save as Type" "Microsoft Excel
Workbook"), freeze the appropriate pane, and see if that makes any
difference after you exit and reopen the application.
