Freeware to read/edit/find EXIF comments in jpgs

Does such a thing exist? Now that my digital picture collection is
becoming quite large is there something that will let me recursively
search dirs full of pics by EXIF keywords or comments, listing all those
that fit the pattern?

Any info, etc.

i've used windows search function to search for *.jpg containing text
'whatever'

worked fine for me :-)
