I'm looking for desktop software that will allow me to follow a stock in
real time. Does such software exist for free? I'm not looking for anything
complex, including charts and stuff. I just need something that shows the
numbers when they go up and down.

Real time? For free? Hehehe...

There are numerous free ones but they are delayed. Lots of real time
ones too but they cost.

This amazing program is payware or ad supported - your choice - Medved
Quotetracker.

www.quotetracker.com

Though it DOES have tons of bells and whistles, you can minimize the
software to leave a scrolling ticker on your desktop (adjustable speed,
font, colors!!!). To get real-time quotes, you'll need access to a real-time
server - perhaps the one provided by your brokerage firm. (Otherwise you can
use a free delayed server) QuoteTracker can link to major firms (you need to
enter your password and log-in).

As an added benefit, the Medveds provide free message board support
personally. You also can get the software to act as a server, allowing you
to link Excel directly to the real-time or delayed data. Great for portfolio
analysis. I hate to sound too enthusiastic, but computer life doesn't get
much better than this software!!!!!

By the way, I know that Quotetracker isn't exactly freeware, but this
software is so good that I think people really don't mind having the ads.
You need to click an ad periodically if you want the program's internal
server to keep operating. Most users probably don't use that component
anyway. But given all the effort the Medveds put into this software,
clicking the ads is a pleasure!!!

Which are the free ones that are delayed? How long are they delayed? I
guess real time isn't that important, I'm just learning the market and
looking for a freebie tool to help me learn.

Take your pick...

MS used to have one too. You can get real time quotes at MSN Money.

Delay is normally 15-20 minutes.
