Pretty good. The programs with limited functions, demo's and trialware are
clearly marked. A good selection and easy to find what one's looking for.

Site popped up a "warning" box about "critical errors" on your machine and
the whole damn box is a hot link which I accidentally clicked and then
instantly closed. I would avoid the place!!

Maybe you need a "pop-up blocker"!

Huh? What's this about? Nothing like that here!

I believe that something associated with my browsing this site has plagued
me...I keep getting ads for
http://www.errorguard.com/ which is some cockamanie pc accelerator. I
don't know if this is "spyware" or not, but I ran spybot about an hour
before I went to this site, and spybot detected nothing...shortly thereafter
it detected some junk, which I routinely got rid of. Worse, just as a
hunch, I used a payware uninstall program and found, unbeknownst to me that
this pos was registered as a program. I ran the uninstall and thought was
rid of it...It is still on my machine...popping up in several tabs....
and it will not stop launching...

I have used at least five registry cleaning programs....to no avail

Anybody have any ideas

PS: I do not know if this "freeware site" is responsible for my problem,
but the old post hoc ergo propter hoc thinking makes me believe it is

any help would be appreciated...for my win xp computer

Install both of these:

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different
kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat
that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new
toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally
install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has
changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even
if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more
spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to
create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement
companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if
something snooped into your computer, too :)

To see a list of threats that Spybot-S&D can remove, click on Support in
the navigation bar at the left, and there on Threats. If you want an
introduction how Spybot-S&D works, please read the tutorial. If you fear
incompability with other software you are using, we can assure you that
will not be the case. Still, we have created a compability overview
listing some software that compability has been asked for before.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you
share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you
worked on. And for professional users, it allows to fix some registry
inconsistencies and extended reports. A list of features is available if
you click on features.

Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the
fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a
web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one
of these unwanted fiends!

The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And
SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.

- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser
hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and
Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet
Explorer.

SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free and secure,
without interfering with the "good side" of the web.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain
running in the background.

SpywareBlaster is freeware for personal and educational use.

Mel:

I had both spybot and spyware blaster installed months, if not years prior
to this fiasco. I run spybot daily at least once a day. Spyware blaster is
installed ..as is MS anti spy ....

I will see what happens:

Somebody on this site said "block" a certain site, but I don't know how....
I use xp (pro)

Spybot works regardless of the browser being used.

That's nice to know. I have not found that information at the
developers site. PK references IE in his description. Do you have a
reference? I'd like to be able to share it with others. I have
suggested SpyBot as a tool for many folks.

Thanks.

And now the rest of you know why I posted a warning.

I did some further research and found what was blocking the pop-ups
(they weren't pop-ups, but Ads) that you were seeing and I wasn't.

Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File

What it does ...
The Hosts file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. This
file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, then Windows checks the
Hosts file before it queries any DNS servers, which enables it to
override addresses in the DNS. This prevents access to the listed sites
by redirecting any connection attempts back to the local machine.
Another feature of the HOSTS file is it's ability to block other
applications from connecting to the Internet, providing the entry
exists.

You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd
party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers. This is
accomplished by blocking the Server that supplies these little gems.
Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all
files supplied by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are
viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Companion Utility which makes it easy to Manage the HOSTS file:

HostsToggle makes turning the "Hosts" file "on" and "off" as easy as
clicking a button. The Hosts file can also be automatically restored
after a specified amount of time - great if you keep forgetting to turn
the Hosts back on! And finally, you can easily load alternate Hosts
files (saved with the extension .tgl) so that instead of completely
turning off the Hosts file, you can load one without the entries that
are causing you trouble.
