ATM we only have four filters listed on the Posting tips page :

[OT] - added to off-topic messages and responses
[AVU] - added to anti-virus update notices
[PL] - added to Pricelessware List discussions
*SPAM* - added to responses to spam posts

Those are all to allow people to filter out posts they are *not*
interested in.

Perhaps filters to help people *find* posts of special interest would
be useful.
[INFO], [HOW-TO], [REVIEW] or some such . . . .
I saw the following list on a web site somewhere
that might be useful ....
[BUSINESS-HOME] [DESKTOP] [FILE UTILITIES]
[GRAPHICS] [INTERNET] [MULTIMEDIA]
[ORGANIZERS] [PROGRAMMING] [SECURITY] [SYSTEM
UTILITIES] [TEXT] [WEB DESIGN]

Maybe it is desirable to try to persuade the powers-that-be to give acf
more subgroups.

perhaps I don't understand your comment. . .

ATM there are 775 subcategories. . .

Well, I wasn't proposing that many! But business, desktop, fileutils,
etc. , maybe.

Agreed.

Here's something I've run up the flagpole to see who salutes it: I
created a wiki page for alt.comp.freeware here:
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?AcfWiki

For those not familiar with wikis, they are online collaborative
documents which anyone can edit, add to, delete, whatever.

To combat the criticism that I was actually wiki-squatting or setting up
a walled garden, I have set up a wiki on my own website. So now you can use
http://www.markcarter.me.uk/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?AcfWiki
instead of the link that I gave earlier.

I can give you more newsgroups on the urls.sytes.net server if you want
them. Just drop me a note in the request ng there and I'll get to them
shortly.

Took a look --- found "Shameless plug (by Mark Carter): summaries of the
links posted to acf are posted daily to this newserver: urls.systes.net on
newsgroup sw.url.summaries." My ISP has not heard of sw.url.summaries or
urls.systes.net. Are we on the same planet?

Probably not. The correct server name is urls.sytes.net or
resources.sytes.net and it's a privately run news server.

I believe that those are meant to be news server address'. It is usual
for news servers to have an address of something like news.xxxxx.xxx .
So that people don't confuse a news server address with a web page
address. The GRC newsgroup server is news.grc.com for example.

Perhaps you thought a news server for url sites should have been
urls.sites.net ? No idea why it is spelt incorrectly.

If it is any consolation to you I cannot connect to urls.sytes.net or
resources.sytes.net either. I get eg.

2004/05/19 10:58:08 WAR {fffb0521} Receiving data from
resources.sytes.net failed

One might need a password perhaps ?

Regards, John.

They're my servers. Try news://urls.sytes.net on port 119 or
ftp://urls.sytes.net on port 21. urls.sytes.net and resources.sytes.net
should both work as they lead to the same computer.

To answer your other question, "sytes" is correct. It's a sub domain
through http://www.no-ip.com .

They're my servers. Try news://urls.sytes.net on port 119 or
ftp://urls.sytes.net on port 21. urls.sytes.net and resources.sytes.net
should both work as they lead to the same computer.

Thanks, but...

What is "WAR" and what are you attempting to accomplish? The news server
and ftp server are both getting plenty of traffic so I know they're working.
Set the news url to urls.sytes.net not news.urls.sytes.net . ftp should be
the same...just urls.sytes.net . Port 119 should take you into the news
server, 21 should take you into the ftp.

Which news and ftp clients are you using? If needed, I'll check them out
here going through the DNS.

I just checked the logs. Did you attempt to login about 5 or 6 times today?
I pulled an IP out of one of your posts and check for that. I found the IP
in about a half dozen places. Every time the IP logged in it immediately
called up the HELP then quit the connection.

I tried news://urls.sytes.net using Outlook Express and connected straight
away, downloaded list of groups (see below for results). Also tried
ftp://urls.sytes.net using Internet Explorer and connected without
difficulty -- I'll look at the items on offer later.

I subscribed to sw.url.summaries and downloaded 66 messages -- all OK, no
problems.
I subscribed to sw.freeware and downloaded 9 items.
#1 Browser to Pricelessware with exe attachment -- OK
#2 Expanded PW CD -- text message -- OK
#3 Gravity newsreader -- Zipfile 1/7 -- OK
#4-9 Gravity newsreader -- Zipfiles 2-7. No attachments were included but
the coding showed as textual gobbledegook.

I do not need Gravity, but thought the above results might be of interest in
view of the difficulties others have reported. Having now returned to this
planet I'll take another look later.

Regards.

What is "WAR"

No idea. Cut and pasted from Hamster.
and what are you attempting to accomplish?

To get a newsgroup list from your server via Hamster.
The news server
and ftp server are both getting plenty of traffic so I know they're working.
Set the news url to urls.sytes.net not news.urls.sytes.net .

That's what I did above. Re-doing it today got me ;

2004/05/21 10:25:35 WAR {fff4164b} Receiving data from urls.sytes.net
failed
ftp should be
the same...just urls.sytes.net . Port 119 should take you into the news
server, 21 should take you into the ftp.

FTP works fine.

Index of ftp://urls.sytes.net/pricelesswarez cd/pw/Programs etc.

Though I don't know what your "warez" page means. The PL ISO files
aren't "warez".
Which news and ftp clients are you using? If needed, I'll check them out
here going through the DNS.

FTP FireFox and news via Hamster. Latter details can be got from my
page at ; http://clients.net2000.com.au/~johnf/hamster2.htm

This is what I get using Dialog :

To get a newsgroup list from your server via Hamster.

It's the Argosoft news server. It may not play nice with hamster. I don't
know, I've never tried to hook the two together.
FTP works fine.

So, you're only having problems with the news server?

Index of ftp://urls.sytes.net/pricelesswarez cd/pw/Programs etc.

Though I don't know what your "warez" page means. The PL ISO files
aren't "warez".

As I stated in the readme file previous to the PW CD area...some programs
listed as "last freeware version" may now be shareware or commercial
programs. Posting a "last freeware version" as a means to circumvent paying
a registration for a license which now overrules a previously freeware
license may be considered as warez. Just like offering a keygen or an
unlocking serial. You have to look at the current license and determine if
the license states that it takes priority over previous licenses making
previous licenses invalid. It happens all the time, not just with programs,
but also with services. Look at the user rules for most any service on the
web...it tells you that the rules may change and you're subject to whatever
the current rules are. Here's another example...Pyxia IBasic. It used to
be that you registered it once and got all upgrades free. Through a set of
events which seemed lower than used car salesman tactics that has changed.

Well, I don't think I'm going to be able to help you with trying to connect
hamster...it's kind of quirky at best. Although, there are several hamster
newsgroups where they may be able to help you. The last time I visited them
a majority of the people there were a bit "off" and would help you if you
speak German.
This is what I get using Dialog :

I haven't tried Dialog, but I can download it and check it out. OE works
fine. Some people accessing the server are using Agent/Free Agent. There
are a few Mozies and a couple NS'ers.

I would offer you my IP for a direct connect, but it doesn't look like DNS
is where the problem is. It looks like a matter of which news readers the
Argosoft server will converse with. With no knowledge of Dialog, I'm going
to take an initial guess that it may be using some newer or more advanced
NNTP commands that aren't programmed into the server. Also take into
account that the server is a "local" server, so at best you'll only be able
to get a one-way stream between it and hamster. The commands which are
particular to the typical suck/feed conversations between two "remote" NNTP
servers are not built into the Argosoft server.

So, you're only having problems with the news server?
Yep.
As I stated in the readme file previous to the PW CD area...some programs
listed as "last freeware version" may now be shareware or commercial
programs.

Fine, but that doesn't mean that the "last freeware version" ceases
being freeware.
Posting a "last freeware version" as a means to circumvent paying
a registration for a license which now overrules a previously freeware
license may be considered as warez.

AFAIK *none* of the PL programs fall into that category. Which PL
programs are you talking about ? They are all "legal" freeware. Not
"warez".

We aren't talking about things that happen all the time. We are
talking about the PL ISO files. The above does not apply. If you have
found a file that has lost it's freeware status then it should be
named, and removed from the PL ISO list.

Agreed. Many Germans with "attitude" problems there.
