freeware pc2pc file transfer

Howard Schwartz

I have been frustrated for a while in finding a way that suits me, to
transfer a lot of files ( but not a whole partition) from one PC to
another. Setting up a network seems overkill, and copying to a
intermediate
medium such as CD-R has its own problems: 2 steps instead of one, and
frequent enough incompatibility between readers and burners, etc.

I like the pc 2 pc file transfer software best, if it is reasonably
fast but does not mysteriously hang on me like, say, fast lynx does.
I have tried:
fast lynx
filelink
xtlink.sys
zip
direct cable connection

Anyone know of a dos based freeware program like fast lynx that can
handle long file names (with protected mode dos)? I would like to
find one.

Thanks,

howard

Connecting 2 PC's with a crossover network cable is very easy.

Then share a folder for reading only on one PC,
copy files from the other PC.

Nothing to install - it is already there
- provided you have network card in your PC's.

No problem with long filenames etc.

Try looking for a fee version of Laplink - available on a PC magazine CD
sometime in the past.
I found the best program for this was Norton Commander V.3-4, '95. Not
freeware. Neither of these need setting up the link as a pseudo netwrok,
unlike Windows' direct transfer. None of the many Norton Commander
clones include laplink cable transfer as far as I know.
