Just did that, I don't get a post fresher than April 2000.

Try this:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vhypno/speechsystem.zip?download

It's part of a larger package for a program called Virtual Hypnotist. It
includes an older version of the MS Speech Development Kit, including MS
Dictation.
Dictation varies somewhat from modern programs in that you have to say one
word at a time with a slight pause between them. I prefer this myself as I
can't think as fast as I can speak.

Do you have the slightest idea of the effort to create that program or
anything like it??

The only way you might find a freeware version is if it is stolen.

Thanks kenny, I can't get to that page tho' prolly because I'm using a
heavily nuked mozilla suite :)

Try:

http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/sdk51

Speech SDK 5.1 for Windows® applications

and/or

http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/old/sdk40a.asp

The Speech SDK 4.0a contains an earlier version of the Microsoft® Speech
API (SAPI) and former Whisper and Whistler speech engines. Microsoft
provides this SDK for compatibility with applications that require it.
However, Speech SDK 5.1 is recommended for speech development.

or perhaps the MS links on this page:

Thanks, have you used it?

Yes I have. I've also used ViaVoice (IBM proggie similar to Naturally
Speaking.) I preferred Dictation because it can only translate discrete
words, ie. you have to pause briefly between words. Most people think faster
than they speak. So they say something, immediately think of a better way to
express the idea then have to backtrack to re-state their idea.
Unfortunately with the "natural speech" programs that results in some pretty
messy dictation. I would get tongue-tied trying to say it right the first
time. However, by pausing slightly between words, you can collect your
thoughts BEFORE you speak with Dictation so you get it right the first time.

You have to train the program to recognize your voice and some words it
never did get right for me. However, these are minor issues that can be
rectified later with a text editor.
