have a friend who is not very knowledgeable with computers who is looking
for a simple program to list information on firearms collection such as
make, serial, barrel length, cal. etc with or with out the ability to add
pictures. Any one know of such a program?

TIA
Dave

Not necessarily freeware (I'd have to modify one of my programs to
change the names of the fields), but any database. I'm not familiar
with Open Office, but there might be one in that suite. Assuming that
he doesn't already have Access, or some other database, on his
computer.

I don't know of a program that's specifically for firearms but there are
*many* all-purpose programs that might be suitable. Can you be more
specific about the kinds of things your friend would like to be able to
do with the program? Searches? Printouts? Web pages? etc. etc.

Thanks for the web site Carl. Will give it to him.

Susan,

other than be able to print out individual or all information on a weapon he
would like to be able to search for a specific weapon in his collection, be
able to add digital pictures to each record, etc. He, like me does not have
the experience to use a commercial program or build one from scratch so hope
this helps.

Let's start with the KISS (keep it simple stupid) requirement. TreePad
would be my first pick.

Program: Treepad Lite and Treepad Asia
Author: (Henk Hagedoorn )
Install: n.i.
Ware: Liteware (free)
http://www.treepad.com/

If your friend wants more bells and whistle he can try Keynote next (it
can import TreePad files).

Program: KeyNote
Author: (Marek Jedlinski)
Ware: (Freeware) (open source: Mozilla Public License)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/keynote/
http://www.tranglos.com/

Either of these programs is good for both structured and unstructured
data. I use a simple template for freeware apps - copy and paste it as
needed, then enter the program information. The template looks like this:
----------
ID#

Program:
Company:
Author:
Install:
W:
Ware:
-----------

I fill in the blanks and then add notes, copies of posts etc. below the
structured information. Think *searchable* messy note book - you don't
have to worry about fitting *all* the information into pre-sized boxes.
.. . TreePad has a particularly good search. Printing is probably best
done by exporting to a text file - that's easy to do from TreePad's
right click menu (you have more export choices in Keynote than TreePad).
Image files can be linked in KeyNote - I'm not sure if there's a way to
do that in TreePad. TreePad is plain text. Keynote uses the rich text
format.

List² is a easy to use program that shows your data in a *table*.

Program: List² (ListSquared)
Company: Monkeyware Software
Install: (n.i.)
Ware: (Freeware)
http://www.bitride.com/freeware.php

You can create an attractive HTML page *very* easily with List² - it's
worth a look just for that.

If none of those apps suit there are lots more available.

Scroll down through that category and the ones directly below it.

One thing to consider carefully before choosing a program is
portability. Some apps use proprietary formats - IOW you might have to
*re-enter* all your data if you decide to change to another app at a
late date. :(

Thanks Susan,

will work with him on the sites listed below and see what can be the best
for what he wants.
