Hi,

Is there a freeware DVD player out there? I do not play to many DVD's on
my laptop and the one that comes installed is a huge piece of bloat. I
seem to remember that the ones I have looked at in the passed were full of
spycrap. I understand that he codec needed isn't free, but stil I would
like something simple and free.

TIA for help and pointers.

The simplest way is to install a test version of a commercial player
and un-install it again. The codecs remain on the hard disk and can be
used even by Microsoft's Media Player.

If you don't want to do it that way, you can ovbtain codecs for free,
like Xvid;-), and use them in any given player. The DVD players aren't
much more than proprietary players, which use those or similar codecs,
after all.

Googling, I found
http://www.cliprex.com/ (not tested)
where there is even a link to the Fraunhofer DVD codec to download

VLC media player
http://www.videolan.org/

VLC is a free cross-platform media player.
+ It supports a large number of multimedia formats,
without the need for additional codecs
+ It is available for almost every OS
+ It needs little CPU power

I still say that the best one is Media Player Classic:

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

Well, I prefer VideoLan Media Player aka VLC which can be downloaded
from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ . This program is open source & runs
on many operating systems. In addition to playing DVD's, it can play
many other audio/video formats.

Check out the features page at
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html .

VideoLan is one of the best DVD players & it is open source.
