Is there any way to bypass the race? Please tell me there is. And what it
is.

Hi Nightwing,

You could probably get a saved game from lancersreactor.com, Or..
Here's how to beat Hovis. It took me a few tries as well.

1. Buy the ship that's on sale at the dealership on the Battleship.
2. Get ready to press Shift+W as soon as the 3 count is done
3. Use the nav points as your guide instead of looking at the rings
4. Use A and D to strafe when you have troubles turning.
5. Practice
6. Practice some more ;-)

The race wasn't all that hard... shift-w when you begin, and just cruise on
through the nav points.
