A friend purchased a distro of FreeBSD and decided not to use it, so he
gave it to me. I'm trying to figure out what it is. Is it a flavor of
Unix? There are no real docs with CD.

Thanks.

Yes its a sorta flavour of Unix/Linux cross (though Linux is based on Unix
anyway)

The is usually a whole folder or even disk with all the HowTo's you need

Thanks to all for their answers.

You know, I'm always so nervous about things like this, partitioning the
disk, all the set-up stuff. You'd think that, aside from creating the
partition, the installer could figure the rest of the stuff out.

Purchased? Are you saying he paid for it?

BTW, FreeBSD is not really divided into distros. If anything, there are
forks, such as DragonflyBSD.

It's a free open source UNIX clone. Similar to, but not the same as, Linux.

There's plenty of docs at http://www.freebsd.org/handbook

Yeah, he published it at Frye's, on a whim. And if you're on dial-up, it
really does pay to purchase the CDs rather than spend all the time
downloading.

Thanks for the answers.
